- Depression is a serious condition that negatively affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. In contrast to normal sadness, clinical depression is persistent, often interferes with a person’s ability to experience or anticipate pleasure, and significantly interferes with functioning in daily life.
- Untreated, symptoms can last for weeks, months, or years; and if inadequately treated, depression can lead to significant impairment, other health-related issues, and in rare cases, suicide.

- Dion Rosana

-Depression is dangerous not only for your mental health but also for your physical health. Untreated depression can take a big toll on you physically. So here are 8 ways depression is dangerous for your health.

1. Heart disease

Studies show that depression can lead to heart disease, make heart disease worse, and make it more difficult to recover from complications of heart disease. Depression can even increase your risk of having a heart attack. Having depression increases your risk of dying by nearly 20 percent in the first six months after a heart attack.

2. Diabetes

Depression may increase your risk for type 2 diabetes if it causes you to eat poorly, smoke, gain weight, and skip exercising. Statistics show that about 20 percent of people with diabetes also have depression.

3. Obesity

If you’re depressed, you have a higher risk of being obese. In fact, depression may increase your risk for obesity by 58 percent. Depression may also cause you to secrete stress hormones that promote belly fat.

4. Mental Decline

Long-standing depression can contribute to loss of brainpower. This is especially true if you are elderly. Untreated depression early in life increases your risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, becoming senile, and having a stroke.

5. Substance Abuse

If you have depression and you aren’t getting the right treatment, you may be tempted to treat your symptoms with drugs or alcohol. What’s more, these substances make depression harder to treat.

6. Cancer

Up to 25 percent of people with cancer also have depression. Some studies show that depression’s effect on your immune system can make cancer worse. Studies also show that patients with depression and cancer have faster tumor growth.

7. Pain

Chronic pain can lead to depression, and having untreated depression can make pain worse. If you have major depression, you’re three times more likely to experience migraine headaches.

8. Suicide

The most dangerous risk from untreated depression is suicide; the risk increases when substance abuse is involved. Two-thirds of all suicides are caused by depression.

What can I do to fight Depression?

Tip 1: Reach Out and Stay Connected

Seek for folks who will make you feel protected and cared for. You don't need the person you talk to to be able to repair you; all they need to be is a good listener, someone who will listen carefully and compassionately without getting distracted or judging you.

Tip 2: Do things that will make you feel good

To combat depression, you must engage in activities that both calm and energize you. Following a healthy lifestyle, learning how to better handle stress, placing limitations on what you can accomplish, and arranging pleasurable things into your day are all examples of this.

Tip 3: Get Moving

Getting out of bed, let alone working out, may be a difficult chore when you're depressed. Exercise, on the other hand, is a potent antidepressant and one of the most crucial weapons in your recovery arsenal. Regular exercise has been shown in studies to be just as beneficial as medicine in treating depressive symptoms. It also aids in the prevention of recurrence once you've recovered.

Tip 4: Eat a Healthy, Depression-fighting diet

The food you consume has a direct effect on how you feel. Reduce your intake of foods that can have a negative impact on your brain and mood, such as coffee, alcohol, trans fats, and foods rich in artificial preservatives or hormones (such as certain meats).

Tip 5: Get a daily dose of Sunlight

Sunlight can enhance your mood by increasing serotonin levels. Get outside during daylight hours whenever feasible and spend at least 15 minutes a day in the sun. Remove your sunglasses and apply sunscreen as required (but never gaze directly at the sun).

Tip 6: Challenge Negative Thinking

It's crucial to remember that these kinds of ideas are a hallmark of depression, and that these unreasonable, negative attitudes—also known as cognitive distortions—aren't realistic. When you look at them closely, they don't hold up. Nonetheless, they might be difficult to give up. You can't just tell yourself to "just think positive" to get out of this gloomy mindset; it's usually part of a lifelong habit of thinking that's become so automatic that you're not even conscious of it. Rather, the key is to recognize the negative beliefs that are causing your melancholy and replace them with a more balanced mindset.

I want you to know that no matter where you are in life, no matter how low you have fallen, no matter how hopeless your position appears to be, it is not the end of the world. This is not the final chapter of your life, nor is it the end of your journey. I know it's tough right now, but if you just stick it out, you'll be OK. If you stick with me for a little while, you will discover that this difficult time will pass, and that if you are committed to using this pain to build your character and find a greater meaning for the pain, you will discover that you can turn your life around and help others who are experiencing similar difficulties. It is estimated that over half of the population will experience depression at some point in their lives. Rather than joining the crowd, it's critical that we figure out why we're depressed and then figure out how to fix it, because, believe it or not, we generate our own bad emotions, and we can also ensure that we turn our lives around and be a positive influence on others. Anyone can get depressed for a variety of reasons, but it always boils down to our constant ideas and beliefs. You must appreciate yourself enough to devote daily time to improving yourself. should do something that will ensure that you have a beneficial impact on the world Of course, this does not imply that life will suddenly become flawless. The same life issues will present themselves, but if your mind is strong, if your mind is at peace, your response to them will be completely different. Not 'why is this happening to me,' but rather 'how can I make this work.' Others will then turn to you for hope, not pity, because your strength will become their hope, their strength. You truly are that strong. You may let go of the victim narrative, forget about the suffering, and concentrate on how you will respond next. How will you respond positively? Read, to get your thoughts in a favorable frame of mind, read whatever you can. Take efforts to guarantee that you will be in a better position next time; whatever pain you are experiencing, how can you ensure that it will not reappear? Take little steps and you'll be at the top of the stairwell in no time. Don't give up; you are deserving, much more than deserving! You deserve to know how wonderful life can be, and you owe it to the rest of the world to be a positive influence on others. Others will look to you for inspiration, saying, "He did it, she did it, and I can do it too."
