The ability to be independent- no matter what happens in Jane's life she still puts her independence and being able to have a grip on her life first. She finally leaves Lowood to be come a tutor and put herself out there. She also leaves Rochester for her independence and not relying on a man.

Faith/religion for guidance- Jane uses religion to get through a lot of her troubles. When she lives at Lowood she prays constantly and uses God and Helen's guidance. She also has a spiritual connection with her dead mother to lead her out of trouble with Rochester. Religion is used primarily as guidance throughout the book; each decision is made according to God and to strengthen one's faith to him.

Irrelevance of Social class/hierarchy - Jane had always been on the lower end of the social class in relation to the money and income aspect. When she went to school and worked in schools, she was always just a governness, not a commanding leader of the school. When she worked as Adele's teacher, she was placed in a caste system under her master, Rochester. Jane does not seem troubled by this system of hierarchy though because she falls in love with her boss, Rochester, and is not phased by it. Jane is not troubled by her place in the social class. She works and interacts with people of all stature and it is not a factor that drives her life to all ends. She works past the social class system.

The desire for family- Jane never had a true family. She never lived with anyone of her blood. She was an orphan and throughout the book was tossed around to different homes. She started in the Reed household, then went to Lowood the school, then to the Rochester household, then got up and left after her one shot at a family with Rochester was burst by finding out he already had a wife. Jane has never had a steady Mom/Dad/Siblings kind of family therefore this is detrimental to her life and who she has become as a character, although she does find real family in the end of the novel. She has become extremely independent and able to move with the crazy circumstances she is given. Although Jane does long for some sort of family, she does okay on her own. Finding some sort of family is a driving force and a question for Jane throughout the entire novel.
