The Witches' discussion of Macbeth in Act 1 Scene 1

The three witches meet in the opening scene of the play; they embody an unreasoning, instinctive evil. The fact Shakespeare opens in the play with the witches tells the audience that this play will be heavily influenced by elements of the supernatural - an issue that the 16th century audience were hyper aware of. In this opening scene, they predict Macbeth’s future and to hint to the audience (foreshadowing) the future of Macbeth; we gather the impression, since they're the ones discussing Macbeth and are wanting to meet him, that they will be influencing him with who they are: evil. They state, When the hurly-burly’s done, When the battle’s lost and won... There to meet with Macbeth." We don't know their intentions with Macbeth, however we do know they are not purse. The witches contribute a supernatural atmosphere to the play as they are the only characters who are able to predict the future and play with Macbeth’s mind.

The blood on Macbeth's hands is depicted in the text in scene 2 act 2. Macbeth has a stained conscience because the blood on his hands cannot be removed. His stained conscience is from his ambitious and power hungry mindset that the supernatural has influenced. Since his first visit to the witches he been led to have blood stains on his hands. "Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood Clean from my hand?

At this stage in the play Macbeth has murdered King Duncan because he has been convinced that he has a place on the throne in the future. We didn't know that the witches would have this effect on Macbeth but his firm belief in the supernatural and his ambition led him to kill his king.

The witches awake Macbeth's ambition by telling him that he will eventually become king, although when they told him this they did not realise how far he would take it and how evil driven he'd become. This scene in particular emphasises how Macbeth's ambition is very significant to the story. The witches have a very supernatural feel seeing as they can tell the future that Macbeth will have. The witches said "All hail Macbeth! hail to thee, thane of Glamis!, All hail Macbeth, hail to thee thane of Cawdor!, All hail Macbeth, thou shalt be king here after!". Macbeth believes every word and does become thane of Glamis and Cawdor, therefore he believed he'd also become king as well. The witches made Macbeth consider killing King Duncan so that he can take the throne for himself. Because of the witches being able to read the future, the supernatural of the witches controlled Macbeth's mind and made him do things he would never have imagined doing.

The supernatural weather emphasis the deeds that macbeth and Lady Macbeth do. Incredible storms rage, the earth tremors, animals go insane and eat each other on the night King Duncan is murdered. The unnatural events highlight the murder and make it seem more scary and creepy. "I heard the owl scream and the crickets cry." When Lady macbeth comes back from killing King Duncan the natural forces of the universe have made noises that suggest that something has happened. The supernatural have influenced the weather and animals on the night King Duncan died to make the play more entertaining for the audience.

The ghost of Banquo represents the theme of supernatural as at the time in England the idea of a supernatural was very real. When Macbeth and Lady Macbeth invited the lords and other guests over for dinner the ghost of Banquo appeared. Macbeth was in shock when he first saw the ghost of Banquo as "The ghost of Banquo enters, and sits in Macbeth's place". Macbeth refuses to sit in his spot that reserved for him.
