Hans Christian Andersen was born, raised and died in Denmark. He was an only child to a father who was a shoemaker and a mother who washed other people's clothes. He had a very poor upbringing. He was famous as a novelist, dramatist and poet, but his fairy tales are his greatest contribution to world literature. He was a confirmed bachelor who enjoyed socializing with the rich and famous. One of his very close friends was Charles Dickens.

In 1835 Hans Christian Andersen published his first novel, Improvisatore, based on his own life. This was a great success in Denmark, England and Germany. He later published five (5) more novels which failed almost completely. Many of his poems are still a part of Danish Literature. Some of his most popular children's stories: The Princess and the Pea; The Ugly Duckling; Thumbelina; The Little Mermaid; and The Emperor's New Clothes.. There were several books of compiled fairy tales.
