I want to turn this into The Fool and The Devil as to me it feels like the relationship between a lover and a manipulator. The fool so unaware and disconcerted of the trouble they are in yet the devil has laid out his plan and even left clues of his betrayal.

Week 1-The Cult of Beauty exhibition at The Welcome Collection, Katie Barker. “The Devil and The Fool”, I chose narcissus and echo by Francesco Bartolozzi after Bendetto Luti, at the cult of beauty exhibition, as I like how, in my opinion it looks devious but unsuspecting, stalking prey with an unaware victim. This etching print inspired me as I loved the style and placement in the exhibition as well as the print. I wanted to keep the original piece as Francesco did and just add overtop changing the theming to fit my narrative I perceived.

Week 2- Trends by Katie Barker. “Unplugged” I wanted to look into the theme of unplugging from social media and connecting more with yourself becoming a healthy individual both in the physical and mental side. Unplugged is a collection from magazines as I wanted to show the used themes of trends that will recycle over and over. I also looked into maximalism with the thought of unplugging people would become a more true version of themselves not having to stick to societal terms of black, whites and greys, and be able to love bright beautiful colours and enjoy filling rooms with small trinkets and more personal items rather than a beige mom Pinterest board.

Week 3- Brand Collaboration by Katie Barker. Gucci x Studio Ghibli. For my brand collaboration I new I wanted to use Studio Ghibli with their incredible artwork, why not mix a talented anime studio with a talented luxury brand. Gucci create some of the nicest basics and maximalist luxury handbags that are a beautiful canvas. Every studio Ghibli fan whether its Spirited away too Princess Mononoke. These bags will be flying off the shelf, as a great piece to everyone’s collection or new staple accessory.

Week 4- Sustainability by Katie Barker. “Their Home”. My piece their home is a reach out to tug the heart strings of friends, families, and neighbours. I wanted my piece to look childlike, as if your very own child has had to beg for their home to be saved. We are the problem, and we have to solve it. My poster looks at deforestation we cause, air, land and sea pollution we cause with vehicles and fabric pollution within our industry and within every one of our lives throwing away clothes rather than recycling, donating or repairing.

Week 5- Campaign by Katie Barker. Diesel. For our campaign as a group ( Summer Bucknell, Emma Barrington, Daisy Pemberton-Smith, Jasmin Owton) we choice to shoot for Diesel in a classic neon arcade theme. We wanted to have a futuristic style but with the retro feeling bringing you back to the good days of arcades. This mixing of the retro feeling but futuristic style with the overarching red theme was exactly what we were going for and paid off with the leather black look that screams diesel styling.

This week I went to both the Barbara Kruger and Refik Anadol exhibition gathering research images to prepare for my written response. I loved Refik Anadol's exhibition as the colors and peacefulness was calming. I also liked Barbara Kruger's, however I feel people there were disrespectful and no understanding of the deeper meaning using it as an instagram post.

Within Barbara Kruger’s exhibition there are many underlying meanings that she wants to portray. She wants to show the power that messages have, and I believe she has done that very well. In a world of flashing lights and force adverts, we are constantly overwhelmed and bombarded with informational overload. We are the cause of the undeniable brain rot we are all experiencing from advert after advert. I didn’t enjoy the exhibition as it was exactly that, it’s a sensory overload, with large flashing lights, consistent sound and audio queues and huge text information laid across the screens. In a day and age with mental illness more prevalent than ever within everyone, undiagnosed or not, she wanted to prove a point that its all damaging our systems and society. Her message that the advertisement we consume is nothing but garbage and memes these days we cannot take anything seriously and we have stooped so low that we cannot even focus without something to stimulate our brains. As consumers we no longer accept adverts the same ways that we used to and now its hard to create a serious advert. In the contemporary fashion industry, we lose interest unless some drama or a reason to choose an opinion. We are forced to make choices and sometimes these choices are not our own, the information we see everyday is forced upon us and with that we are quick to make decisions based on a past. One piece at the exhibition a massive video playing on loop, amazingly captivated this, with a mixture of memes composted with important and very meaningful messages. The audios of important speeches mixed with funny and cringe audios proved to me that as a society we no longer take in important information unless faced with a life changing task. I cannot deny that even in that moment the only real part that I took on were the stupid audio queues and small jokes. This also touches on not just us as consumers but the power of advertising as we get all of this from adverts, we can’t help but see and watch these. With adverts everywhere, bus stops, supermarkets and almost every social media network. Her entire exhibition embodied the message and properly conveyed her point of view. Even the audience proved her message right, people around were so disjointed from reality that they couldn’t respect the silence around and used it as nothing more than an Instagram piece. Her exhibition has opened my eyes and hopefully yours to the bigger issue that we need to stop and look around once in a while and disconnect from our phones and advertising. We as a society and in the fashion industry can advertise in better ways than an informational overload.
