Ford was born in Wayne County, Michigan on July 30, 1863. Ford lived on a farm as the oldest of 6 children with his mother, Mary Ford, and his father, William Ford. By the time he was 12, he started to build an interest in mechanics when he spent his free time in a small machine shop. At 13 he would fix his neighbors’ timepieces and at 15 he made his first steam engine. After his mother died, he was told to take responsibility for the farm but refused to do it and ran away from home to Detroit at 16. Ford eventually married Clara Jane Bryant in 1888 and they had a son named Edsel in 1893.

When Ford moved to Detroit, he attended Detroit Business Institute where he learned more about bookkeeping and the operations of steam engines. After 3 years, Henry came back to the farm and in 1884 was hired by a company that operated and repaired engines built and sold in Michigan. Ford eventually moved back to Detroit 9 years later and attended Goldsmith, Bryant & Stratton Business University from 1888 to 1890.

What inspired Ford to make the Model T was the struggle of Americans being unable to afford cars. He wanted to make a car that was affordable, simple, and durable. During his years at Edison Illuminating Company of Detroit, he started working on a gasoline engine. He tested his first one on Christmas Eve with the help of his wife Clara. The engine was a success, lasting 30 seconds long. Then after 3 years he made a self-propelled vehicle, which eventually led to the invention of the Model T.

Henry Ford went through many struggles such as when he spent the majority of his money from his first group of investors without producing a car. Then when his first company, Detroit Auto Company went bankrupt after producing a car. He also had a big drop in sales when he refused to update the Model T in 1920. Ford also tried to start a political career, but it never became successful. Through all these struggles, Ford said “Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.”.
