This image encapsulates the typical patriarchy; where a man is the primary face in leadership in social ideologies.

This is an image of a recruitment site for california highway patrol, a policing occupation. Although, the academy is open to both men and women, their sites’s front page displays only a male officer.

This is directly related since police or corrections departments/agencies are largely made up of a male population despite the fact that it is open to all genders. This image is a representation of the stereotype and patriarchy that plays into society about male officers having more facilities to take on the role. However, we see this is not always true at all since women have a higher rates of deescelated situations using their communication tactics.

Segregation is a term used to describe the happening of someone or something being excluded and separated. Within social problems, we often see segregation portrayed through racial, gender, disability, sexuality, and institutioanl bias. Sometimes we see segregation happen in schools between boys and girls institutions or black and white social groups. In this image, the boy with a visible disability is placed apart from his classmates due to his condition. This can be seen as an act of segregation due to the fact that there were multiple ways this student could've been included in the class photo with all of his other peers without being unfortunately left out.

In week 1 of Diane's Deep Dive, we are taught about private and public issues. Private troubles directly impact individuals due to circumstances and other individuals around them, whereas public issues impact larger numbers of people and require a mass solution. The image shown above is a "Note of Hope" that are put up by a local suicide prevention community to reassure those planning to attempt suicide that they deserve another chance at life and are worthy of staying. The community started posting the notes back in 2019, in addition to the county raising the bridge's rails, due to the rising rates of suicide on this bridge. The bridge has a total of over 100 suicides since the opening in 1973, with an increase during and after the COVID pandemic which was known to have also globally impacted many individuals mentally. We can argue that mental illness could be a result of one's personal problems, but using sociological imagination can conclude that this is a private trouble that many individuals face in relation to others around them.

This quest presents us with the address of Breonna Taylor and where her life was unfortunately cut short by the hands of the local policemen. Police had let off several rounds of ammunition at Breonna’s home, shooting her 8 times in her bed. Police were looking for drugs they never found, reportedly trafficked by a person who did not live with Breonna or in her complex, and whom they already had in custody.

This played a part in the ignition of BLM protests all over during the COVID pandemic. People all over the world feeling the loss of Breonna and seeking justice. This is a perfect representation of the institutional racism we see in society. Diane explains how we see institutional racism within the education and employment systems, but especially within our policing agencies as well. This can pertain to certain races being at an advantage or disadvantage when it comes to job openings or university admissions due to a subconscious bias based off of social statuses that have been put in place over the course of our history. In this case, African American, Latino, and minority groups are significantly represented in statistic reports of police force and incarceration.

(Question 4) Who benefits from this and how?

White people benefit from this social inequality simply because they do not experience the mistreatment, thus not having to remove the pedestal from beneath themselves. By not realizing or acknowledging that they hold a certain privilege, they also continue to gain security and protection at the expense of minority groups.

(Question 6) Who has the power and how do you know?

In this case, major police agencies, politicians, or federal agencies have the power. All three listed have some major commonalities: great wealth with high protection from the state or country, and powerful voices. We can see this proven by looking into white collar crimes and how uncommon/low the rate is due to the costs it would take to actually carry them out, in which they have plenty of.

QUEST 15: JUNE 8, 1919 & AUGUST 18, 1920

On June 8, 1919 and August 18, 1920, Congress passed the 19th amendment that allows women to vote to this day.

This topic specifically relates to our social studies with the idea that women have suffered through generations of inequality due to gender roles and conformity. The patriarchy ran all government positions and those in power are generally men, even to this day. Gender roles are an aspect that plays a part in the patriarchy since it consists of a male in power within our society.

(Question 1) Ask the Other Question:

This quest can be associated with gender inequality and the patriarchy. By “asking the other question”, we can also see how women have been brought up to be nurturing and emotionally calculated since the early century. Whereas men have been brought up to be very manly and hardly emotional. This stems from the fear of being labeled as less of a man, which is detrimental when gender labeling provides a sameness between you and your peers. If you don’t share a sameness, then where do you fit in? This brings an underlying fear to most men. A fear of not fitting in and being “too feminine”. The patriarchy was set up in order to uphold this social structure where men remain in power.

(Question 8) What is missing from this that is important to note?

It is very important to note that this amendment was not easy to pass. History shows that it took decades of protest and consistency to get where we are now. This amendment was proposed way back in 1878 and was not ratified until early 1900s in 1920 specifically.

“TX SB8” represents the bill passed in Texas that prohibits women from getting abortions after 5 week conception.

This quest directly relates to reproductive rights that are mentioned in our course in addition to gender inequality and studies. Through the module, we learn about the discrimination, restrictions, and limitations that female, queer, and transgender individuals face, especially within our healthcare systems. This is a prime example pertaining to women in this case.

(Question 7) How does the meaning of this change depending on who is using or observing it?

Religious people may interpret abortion as a morally wrong-doing or sin, or even murder; whereas a teenage girl may see this bill as a great danger/threat to her body and mental state after being impregnated against her will, without knowledge, or suffering from lack of proper resources.

(Question 8) What ideological perspective is represented here and how do you know?

Religious ideology is represented heavily here since abortion is strongly opposed in many religious cultures such as Christianity and Catholicism. Within this religion, it is wrong, punishable, and considered a sin when one aborts a life that is deemed to be a gift from God. Therefor, discarding it in any circumstance is frowned upon and raises controversy over what is considered “inhumane” and also in comparison to murder.

Thus, contributing to both intentional and sometimes unintentional segregation in society as a result.

(Question 10): How is this represented in media?

In many instances, we see that the media likes to group individuals into categories and broaden their posted information to let their consumers interpret and subconsciously use their imagination to create a narrative of their own, breeding ongoing biases. Simply put, the media instigates a preexisting bias by putting out just enough information to make individuals feel like they have all elements of a fact, furthering individual’s justification on their algorithmic prejudice.

(Question 11): What is the historical context here?

We’ve lived through many generations that were outwardly racist, prejudiced, and implemented and justified segregation within our society such as racially separated appliances and institutions.

In week 10, we discussed an insufficient amount of laws, regulations, and standards that have been set in place to protect our citizens from acts of hate and harassment like displayed above.

(Question 3): What claims are made about this and how strong is the evidence?

Elektra makes an FABULOUS and outstanding claim that the gender norms that have been placed in today’s society does not equate to what defines a woman nor does it make up for the opposing lady’s complacency. Literally speaking, the evidence isn’t very strong since this is just a scripted show; however, realistically speaking, this mindset is shared amongst many cisgendered individuals that believe the competence of social norms regarding gender placed in society, is what makes them more or less of a man/woman.

(Question 9): What ideological perspective is represented here and how do you know?

A conservative ideology can be seen represented by the cisgender white woman in this clip based off of her argument that the transgender women did not belong in the shown establishment, promoting a traditional mindset in which transgenders are not socially accepted or valued the same as cisgenders.

On the front of this liquor store is a sign advertising that they accept EBT. This relates to the poverty we face in America specifically, where financial support is highly recommended and offered to those in need, such as EBT. In week 6/7, we discussed economic inequality and how wealth is unequally distributed throughout. It is evident that more than half the population is considered lower class or in poverty. This image is a representation of how the government will manipulate society to think they are providing us with financial support through EBT, Welfare, Medical, etc, when realistically, they keep citizens in this division by not keeping up with the wage to tax ratio, keeping the wealthy rich and the poor in poverty, in efforts to always have individuals who will need these resources from them. More so, we see that EBT is only accepted in select establishments. Shown above, EBT is accepted at a liquor store in a poor area, but not a local grocery or diner that would provide food and needed resources for a family. Thus, enabling and influencing the likelihood of rising addictions and less valuable resources for those who need it.
