To get government support in Thailand, you must hold the correct paperwork. To get this, you must have proof of birth in Thailand, which is often impossible for hill tribe families who live remotely or who have crossed the border illegally to live in Thailand, fleeing from poverty. The paperwork is also expensive and difficult to attain, making it out of the realm of possibility for many villagers, and so they eke out an existence, barely subsisting.

Nok always felt that her mother was angry and very critical. Perhaps the stress of making ends meet day after day was responsible for her mother’s moods. Nok, now 17 years old, remembers her mother as someone that could never say something loving or encouraging. She became very angry at herself and at a young age became distant from her mother. Yet, as is the way with hurting children, Nok always wanted a close relationship with a mother that was gentle and kind.

By 15 years of age, Nok had left home with a fractured relationship with her mother and brothers. There are few employment opportunities in Thailand for young girls with little education, so Nok started working in a karaoke bar, seeing it as her only option for survival. Here she was taken advantage of and soon forced into brothel work.

Nok learned to hate the men that abused her and became increasingly angry. She practiced kickboxing and fighting in her spare time, always seeking to prepare herself for self-defense.

Nok had been so wounded as a child and now she was being physically, sexually and mentally destroyed in the karaoke bars.

She began to groom herself like a boy. She cut her beautiful long black hair so short that it was difficult to tell her gender.

The lack of a loving relationship with her mother and her hatred towards men, soon found Nok ‘choosing’ to become what Thais call a ‘Tom’ – a lesbian.

She was rescued at 17 and came to live in the safety of a Rescue Home. She attended counselling groups for girls dealing with trauma. Some girls did not know Thai and were unable to express themselves about the damage done to them. Nok, who speaks three languages, became their voice. She was kind and patient with the girls; she listened and tried her best to help them tell their stories. She became like the kind and gentle mother she had never had.

Nok began the path to healing and soon gained the respect of the girls and staff that she lived with; however, she seemed locked in her male personae. She actively resisted living life as a female. She was lovingly accepted by all the staff for who she was.

In one of the group sessions, Nok talked about her own anger toward her mother for hating her and making her feel so unloved and lonely. Nok made a choice to forgive her mother and all the men that had abused her. She cried out in pain; her stony heart was broken open to expose the tender flesh of love inside. That was a transforming moment for Nok. Her life has changed since then.

Nok has become a flower opening; she is growing her hair long again and the boy clothes are being slowly replaced. She continues to bless all the girls that she lives with.

Not long after starting work for their aunt, she began to prostitute them. They brought in good income for the uncaring woman who was meant to be their guardian. The girls were regularly forced to have sex with men they did not know and could not understand.

They could not communicate with anyone to ask for help. They were locked into a silent nightmare of isolation caused by their age, being so far from home, the language barrier and the violations that were perpetrated against them.

Shame, disbelief and shocking depression were a constant. This was their reality – their daily nightmare. Then Destiny Rescue showed up.

Fon and Ling were rescued by Destiny Rescue in late 2012 and have been living in a Destiny Rescue home since then. Here they receive love, sustenance and emotional support. Fon has been very quick to respond and adjust to living at Destiny Rescue. Ling, however, has been slower to trust. Both girls will have access to ongoing counseling, education and valuable vocational training as they continue to go through healing of their bodies, souls, and minds.
