Found: PBS Learning Media

Intended Audience: 5-10 grade students

In this kinesthetic model, students will learn that plants need carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight to carry out photosynthesis. Using ping pong balls and egg cartons, they will simulate the production of sugar molecules to store energy (photosynthesis), and then break apart these molecules to acquire energy (cellular respiration). This active simulation makes it easier to remember both processes!

Useful for: Helping students comprehend and remember the process of photosynthesis and cellular respiration

Complete the activity outside or set up in an easy-to-clean spot in your classroom. This allows your students to have the space to create and experiment. In addition to science and art, the splat painting gives children the chance to practice their gross motor skills. It also involves some math and a lot of problem-solving inherent to the gravity painting.

Useful for: Mixing science and art for young student's comprehension of gravity
