This article can be found at https://www.kcet.org/food-living/how-californians-are-fighting-food-waste-on-the-farm-at-the-store-and-at-home. The authors main point of this whole article is to show us how to reduce food waste and protect our environment from the harmful effects of decomposing processed food. My reaction is surprised, I didn’t realize we wasted so much food. For example certain vegetables are thrown away not because their quality is bad but because they are misshapen.
- emma fitzpatrick

In use fishing methods don't only impact the ocean but also lost fishing gear does. Many of the lost fishing gear continues to capture sea animals which will never be harvested or used.

Main point: The impact of the big fishing industries is detrimental to the sea.
Evidence:
"they continue to catch animals, a phenomenon known as “ghost fishing.”
"churns up sediments along the seafloor, causing them to become suspended in the water column, decreasing water quality."
Reaction: I was aware of a few of the impacts of the fishing industry, however after reading this there is so many more issues. Almost everything they do is harmful to the animals.
Enviro.

Food security is the right of every individual to have access to safe and nutritious food, consistent with the right to adequate food and the fundamental right of everyone to be free from hunger. There has been a decrease in food insecurity especially within Western countries due to economic changes and rapidly increasing populations. A large part of this food insecurity comes from long periods of high unemployment, as well as decreased wages. Roncarolo, the author of this article, explains how there’s only two ways to solve this food insecurity problem: address the causes of the problem, or treat the problem directly. Most Western countries rely on food distributions, or food banks, to directly treat the problem. However, it is argued whether or not food banks actually help to alleviate food insecurity, as it relieves the government of their duties. As for adresssing the causes of food insecurity, Roncarolo suggests government commitments to living wages and welfare, taxation reforms, and new approaches to agricultural food and nutritional policies. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4830644/

Reilly Condrey
Humans rely heavily on the animals mass produced in factory farms. All across the U.S. they are treated inhumane, taken out of their natural habitat to be slaves in the factories created. Their "homes" are overcrowded with no room to roam free and stretch their legs, filled with Ammonia from pig waste, no sunshine or pasture, and they are forced to live that way. It is a dangerous system for both the farm animal culture and the now factory owners and workers. Many aren't aware by picking up a hamburger on the side of the road, and supporting these chains, that you influx this negative environment for animals, and keep a roof over this issue.
Main Point : Animals are stuck in a system of unhealthy and unnatural mass production.
Evidence: "Ammonia fumes rise to dangerous, uncomfortable levels due to the pigs’ waste."
"U.S., rely heavily on inhumane factory"
My stance: I believe the connection between farmers and animals is gone. It is now not a passion for most to work with animals so they make environments where it is easier for the market but makes animals slaves to the system. It is important to support healthy environments for animals and not ignore the issue of mass production factories.

https://www.aspca.org/animal-cruelty/farm-animal-welfare/animals-factory-farms

Samantha Elias
Most fast food is loaded with carbohydrates with little to no fiber. When your digestive system breaks down these foods, carbs are released as glucose into your bloodstream. As a result, your blood sugar increases. The author's main point is to show how eating fast food can have a negative effect on your body. The author states that, "Your pancreas responds to the surge in glucose by releasing insulin. Insulin transports sugar throughout your body to cells that need it for energy." With too much insulin, it could lead to unusual sugar spikes. The author also mentions, "these insulin spikes may cause your body’s normal insulin response to falter."
This is very unhealthy for humans and could heavily affect their bodies. https://www.healthline.com/health/fast-food-effects-on-body#digestive-and-cardiovascular-systems

Food security means that people have a regular access to food all the time. The problem is food insecurity for many people in the world and poverty is usually a closed association to food insecurity. It's more of a problem in 3rd world countries where poverty is a bigger problem. The author has three main points which are the three parts to food insecurity; first food availability which is having a sufficient supply of food on a regular basis. Then food access; having sufficient access to nutritious foods. Finally, food utilization; are people eating right based of a good knowledge of nutrition and care. "There are a number of factors that can affect a person's economic access to food, including lack of job opportunities that can provide sufficient income, or lack of training or business knowledge for success with income generating activities". "Even when a sufficient supply of food exists to feed everyone, food may not always be accessible to everyone." I think it's sad that some people live in fear of being hungry and sometimes starving to death.

Many foods are produced through chemical processing to keep them preserved, to make them taste better, cheaper manufacturing, etc. Which are all unnatural for the body to try and process and use. The author’s main point is that real foods are the key to good health, processed food is never. “Food manufacturers spend massive amounts of resources on making their foods as "rewarding" as possible to the brain, which leads to overconsumption.” “Most highly processed foods are loaded with artificial chemicals, including flavorants, texturants, colorants and preservatives.” I agree 100% with this article. Foods that are almost straight from the source or not processed at all is what will be the promoter of good health. As great tasting processed foods are, if we want to be healthy we must find healthy real alternatives to these.

They recruit independent consultants and pay them based off the money paid by other consultants they have recruited. Arbonne promotes a healthy and lavish life but Arbonnes income statement shows that over 86% of consultants lose money with the business model. The arbonne is promoting a healthy lifestyle but only delivering a moneyless lifestyle to hopeful americans trying to better themselves. This makes me so sad because it is taking over the media and manipulating girls my age to spend money on products and a lifestyle that leaves them with no guap and crushed dreams. -Liz Wood (‘19)

Fresh water is a limited resource that is required in the production of food, but the food industry is producing excess food that leads to a waste of water. The author claims that food production is too high compared tp the demand, which leads to a lot of resource depletion. I agree that something needs to change in the food industry to preserve these limited resources, such as water.

The researchers believe this is most likely due to rat feces and human hair getting in the burgers somehow. Another concerning fact about this was the fact that they often found the contents of the burgers often deviated greatly from what nutritional labeling says. Personally, I think this is very concerning because it makes me really question what I'm eating whenever I eat burgers from now on and I think there should be a stricter heath code for fast food chains so these cases don't happen ever.

Aveline Langmead
As evident in every part of the world, waste is a serious problem. In the article, "Straws are out, lids are in: Starbucks announces environmental milestone" by Bonnie Rochman, it describes the process taken by Starbucks innovators in designing their new lid. This new lid will eliminate the use of plastic straws in the franchise, eliminating the use of up to a billion plastic straws per year. The author makes sure to emphasize how much change this will make, all by simply changing the shape of the lid. Before introducing these changes, the author described how Starbucks has always been committed to the recycling aspect of the company. For example, "...Starbucks is announcing today that it will phase out plastic straws from its more than 28,000 stores worldwide by 2020, a decision that will eliminate more than 1 billion straws a year." This in turn will be a leading innovator in the fight to eliminate further contribution to the environmental issues surrounding food wastes. '“Starbucks’ decision to phase out single-use plastic straws is a shining example of the important role that companies can play in stemming the tide of ocean plastic,” said Nicholas Mallos, director of Ocean Conservancy’s Trash Free Seas program. “With eight million metric tons of plastic entering the ocean every year, we cannot afford to let industry sit on the sidelines.”' I feel like this is a huge step forward in this dramatic global problem. A huge company like Starbucks supporting this issue is extremely beneficial in aiding this fight against pollution.

Bethany Arias
Millennials are demanding healthy, safe and “clean” food. In 2019, it has become a trend for food to be safe, healthy, and clean to eat. Millennials are expecting companies to make products that are cleaner and healthier, “natural” not processed. In mid-November 2018, the USDA and FDA will be overseeing the production of “clean meat”. The trend of “clean” products has also sparked the trend for plant-based foods which is becoming a big success. David Acheson, author of 2019’s Food Safety and Regulation Issues, states that this consumer vigilance will most likely lead to increased litigation around claims such as “natural” and “healthy” while manufacturers are asserting their rights in battles against California’s Proposition 65. I think millennials wanting “natural” , “healthier” , and “clean” food is perfectly fine and could help Americans become healthier. Also the trend of plant-based foods is a good diet especially to vegetarians and vegans, which is also a booming business for markets.

The plant has been closed for cleaning since they have been suspected to have sickened 23 people. The author's main point was to inform citizens that the risk of Salmonella to consumers is very low, yet possible. "The risk is very low... [and] the plant id closed for cleaning" (associated press). although getting salmonella from their products is unlikely, citizens should be cautious of possible threats. Health services say that "23 Oregon residents were confirmed to have matching DNA patterns of salmonella braenderup" due to the products of this plant (associated press). This caused a call to action to recall their mild and juice products to ensure health. Personally, recalls of foods as common as milk make me really cautious of food at local grocery stores. I would want to feel safe with the food in my locality.
Source: https://www.foxnews.com/health/oregon-dairy-recalls-milk-juice-products-tainted-with-salmonella

"contamination of groundwater, and salinization of water sources." is an example of what negative effects are seen on the environment. "Water-quality effects will depend on the nutrient content of the algal culture medium; whether feedstock production systems are sealed, artificially lined, or clay lined; this demonstrates the contamination of water that will occur if this is not regulated. My response to this is that it should be regulated because many places already have minimal water access and this will devastate their water quality.

"One third of America’s food with an economic value of US$161 billion is wasted and less than 7% is recycled." "South Korea, on the other hand, has implemented the world’s strictest food
waste laws, and today diverts 93% of wasted food away from landfills turning such waste into powerful economic opportunities." World hunger is not something that is easily solved, but we can definitely work towards it and stop wasting precious food.

The amount of carbon emissions used to produce all of the unused food amounted to at least 3.3 billion tons of carbon dioxide in 2007 and has increased since then. Studies show that the food surplus we produce has often gone to waste and that we produce more food than we need and yet a lot of the world goes hungry. I believe this is extremely concerning because it not only is concerning because of the environmental implications, but the social implications as well. We should be limiting the amount of food we produce and we should try not to be as wasteful as we are and send the surplus food we have to people in need instead of wasting it all for nothing.

Aveline Langmead
A major argument as posed by environmentalists is the use of water to produce our food. So much water, on top of the water used for our daily needs, goes towards making our food. The author doesn't necessarily implement their ideas, rather backs up the claim that too much water is used to produce our food with facts. In the article, "To make a burger, first you need 660 gallons of water..." by Betty Hallock, opens my eyes to how crazy this controversy really is. "On average, the water we use in our households is about 98 gallons a day, says a U.S. Geological Survey. The industrial goods we use -- paper, cotton, clothes -- that's about another 44 gallons a day. But it takes more than 1,000 gallons of water a day per person to produce the food (and drinks) in the average U.S. diet, according to several sources. More than 53 gallons of water go into making 1 cup of orange juice, for example." "...1 pound of cheese requires 600 gallons of water.

Large land fills filled with food waste produce a lot of methane gas that goes into the atmosphere and contributes to global warming. The authors main point is food waste is morally wrong, contributes to global warming, also it wastes the resources and time used to produce it, and a large solution would be to stop throwing it out and give it to countries who are suffering from hunger. “Food waste that ends up in landfills produces a large amount of methane – a more powerful greenhouse gas than even CO2. For the uninitiated, excess amounts of greenhouse gases such as methane, CO2 and chloroflurocarbons absorb infrared radiation and heat up the earth’s atmosphere, causing global warming and climate change.” “By throwing out one kilogram of beef, you are essentially wasting 50,000 liters of water that were used to produce that meat.” I agree with the author’s points that left over and ugly foods should go to areas and communites that need it, but as far as saying it contributes to global warming, I would have to do more research on the decomposition of foods to see if it produces methane gas. And if so, how much.

Food borne diseases effect humans' health such as salmonella, norovirus, camplylobacter, and 250 others that can 🤬 humans. This is a problem because a lot of the time we don't catch that a virus has effected a food until it hurts someone. The authors main point is that these diseases can 🤬 people. "Harmful toxins and chemicals also can contaminate foods and cause foodborne illness. "People with immune systems weakened from medical conditions, such as diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease, organ transplants, HIV/🤬, or from receiving chemotherapy or radiation treatment." It's scary to think that we don't know what is in our food sometimes.

we’re already producing way more food than the world actually needs but a lot of the excess is being wasted, instead of used to feed people who need it.Its worrying implications for both the environment and global food security and the clearer it becomes how much of a problem it is.''The study found that the global food surplus increased overall between 1965 and 2010 from 310 extra kilocalories per person per day to 510 extra kilocalories, with the greatest surplus growth rates generally observed in developed nations.''''As of 2010, 20 percent more food was being produced worldwide than was actually needed to feed the world’s population, and overall the researchers estimated that the global surplus could be used to feed an extra 1.4 billion people.'''' I think this is also important because a lot of people waste their food without thinking of its affects

Patrick Weraksa

Over the last two decades, small- and medium-scale farms raising animals for food have given way to factory farms that confine thousands of cows, hogs and chickens in tightly packed facilities. Factory farms produce millions of gallons of manure that can spill into waterways from leaking storage lagoons or fields where manure is over-applied to soil. Manure generates hazardous air pollutants and contains contaminants that can endanger human health. Neighbors of factory farms, as well as the workers in them, often suffer intensely from overwhelming odors and related headaches, nausea and other long-term health effects. Factory farms can create other health hazards because they are over-crowded and stressful to animals, making it easy for disease to spread. When thousands of beef cattle are packed into feedlots full of manure, bacteria can get on their hides and then into the slaughterhouses. Contamination on even one animal can contaminate thousands of pounds of meat inside a slaughterhouse.

This is a danger not to the environment but to wildlife , ecosystems , and kills the soil. Between climate change, deforestation, droughts, and white people who need caffeine. Arabica beans are the most popular commercial coffee variety and they are already considered to be endangered. Coffee providers in the United States are not Rain forest Alliance Certified which is why we are literally killing everything. This makes me really triggered. The fact that coffee is endangered makes me just as sad I was when the Northern White Rhino went extinct.

Fast food restaurants are extremely popular due to how convenient and cheap they are. However the “benefits” are not quite worth the consequences. One consequence to shed light on is the impact of fast food on the digestive and cardiovascular systems. Most fast food are loaded with carbohydrates and little to no fiber. When your digestive system breaks this down, the carbs turn to glucose, and as a result your blood sugar rises. Your pancreas responds to the increase in blood sugar by releasing insulin which returns blood sugar levels to normal. Normally your body is able to handle these fluctuations in blood sugar, however consuming large amounts of fast food frequently, leads to many spikes in blood sugar over time. Over time, these insulin spikes may cause your body’s normal insulin response to falter. This increases your risk for insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and weight gain.

Eating habits can be socially transmitted. The way people eat and diet is heavily influenced by how they observe peers, are told things about their eating habits, or want to change their social identity. For example, if told they eat large portions, that person will eat more. “Human behavior can be guided by a perceived group norm, even when people have little or no motivation to please other people." This shows that we consciously and unconsciously make the effort to act, and eat, like those around it . It is proven that eating habits can correlate with social identity. This is how diets like Veganism have become mainstream. This can also contribute to eating disorders.

Red meat is responsible for "10 to 40 times as many greenhouse gas emissions as common vegetables and grains". We are also wasteful since we " eat less meat in order to save the environment. We also use a lot of materials in the process. In the US alone, we use "167 million pounds of pesticides and 17 billion pounds of nitrogen fertilizer each year across some 149 million acres of cropland". The author hopes for people to change their diet to vegetarian or at. I believe meat is still very high and protein and important to our health.
Source:
https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/meat-and-environment/
