The feeling of pleasure, or the "reward pathway" is caused by a chemical in the brain called dopamine. Our brain cells release dopamine during "pleasurable" activities and they have receptors that receive this neurochemical signal. The "reward pathway" evolved to help us engage in healthy activities. Early man had a scarce supply of fat and sugar. This rewarding system was established by evolution to make us want to look for more fat and sugar. This explains why we love fatty fried foods and sugary drinks/candy so much. However, this also makes dopamine very dangerous. Psychoactive drugs trigger the release of a large amount of dopamine in the brain, creating an almost overwhelming feeling of pleasure. However, this also causes brain cells to lose those receptors. This makes it harder to feel the feeling of pleasure. Normal activities such as entertainment and food become less enjoyable. Then you need a higher dose of the drug in order to just feel the same way.
