WWI ended in November of 1918. Many steelworkers expected their wartime gains to continue, because of the war steelworkers got paid more. Before the war, workers faced difficult working conditions, long hours and low pay. When workers didn't get the high pay they were expecting they went on strike to try and force their employers to higher their pay.  The largest strike occurred September 1919 to January 1920, known as the "Great Steel Strike of 1919." Because the steel industry was so important back then, the strikes had a major influence on a number of Ohio cities.
