Beneatha is a very sarcastic woman and banters a lot. She is also characterized as a feminist and someone who doesn't take your crap, regardless of class, color or gender. She also seems to have an insatiable appetite for knowledge and takes every opportunity to grow and learn. She sometimes can only see what is in front of her but she has a way of reflecting and realizing things. In her conversation with George about the struggles of Black Americans, he explains that he wants a nice, quiet and sophistication girl. This helps show the difference in Beneatha and George. But individuals are highly educated but George only obtains education for life, for a job. Beneatha searches for knowledge with a hunger for it, she wants to learn for the actual process of learning.

Beneatha is a black woman, this is really important when it comes into terms of her personality. The stigma already imposed against the black population remains but it only worsens against her because of her ambitions. She is also said to have her hair straightened, while true it may be easier to handle, this could point to the assimilation Joseph Asagai mentions.

Joseph Asagai refers to Beneatha as Alaiyo, meaning (One for Whom Bread—Food—Is Not Enough). This is appropriate because Beneatha is always searching for more, in love, in education and in life.
