P: Roger treats Henry as Henry treats the animals. Roger wants to go further, to actually hurt Henry, but civilisation holds him back.
E: ‘Roger’s arm was conditioned by a civilisation that knew nothing of him and he was in ruins.
E: (1) The concept of the quotation is to show how Roger has not yet turned to savagery because the restraints of civilisation are holding him back. (2) The theme of the extract is that even if you really want to do something bad, the restraints of civilisation inside you will hold you back. (3) The verb conditioned has connotations of restrain and control showing that civilisation has control over Roger at the moment and can influence him to not to bad. (4) The writers intent is to show how the boys have not yet turned to savagery however the process has already begun and there’s no turning back once they loose their morals. It also shows John locke’s theory.
L: The effect of this on the reader is that it shows them how all the boys are turning to savagery in their own time however they are all going to become savage. This makes the reader feel anxious about the boys because they don’t want this to happen.

"Civilised" boys pick on Piggy for the same reason: it's human nature.
E: ‘Piggy and the parody were so funny that the hunters began to laugh. Jack felt encouraged.’
E: (1-Concept) Everybody on the island want to feel included in a group because otherwise they will become alienisd from the group like Piggy is from the start. Therefore even if it means hurting someone to feel safe the boys will do it.
(2-Theme) The theme is the formation of a new tribe on the island and anyone who thinks or looks differently they are discriminated against and left out.
(3-Style) The verb ‘encouraged’ shows that when the boys all work together everyone feels like they are part of a group and are stronger than Piggy who is not included.
(4-Writer’s intent) Golding’s intent is to make the reader understand the differences between Piggy and the boys specifically to Jack, that Jack feels strong in a group but Piggy has no place in it.
L: A reader of the time in the 1950s would feel more relations with Piggy because throughout the book he is a symbol of civilisation and the readers would have wanted to have more order than Jack’s ‘civilisation’.

P: Savagery and civilisation clash in the open for the first time. Jack chooses to hunt over tending the fire. His choice has devastating consequences.

E: “I was chief and you were going to do what I said. … You can’t even build shelters - then you go off hunting, and you let out the fire - … The job was too much. We needed everyone. … You could’ve had everyone when the shelters were finished. But you had to hunt”
E: Ralph is angry that the “hunters” can’t see the big picture. All they talk about is killing and blood, whereas him, Piggy and Simon can, when they saw a ship they dropped everything to go and get smoke billowing from the fire to attract a ship. Jack and the other boys have become entranced by the island and only want to have one basic purpose, to kill. This gets too much for Ralph and he decides to call a meeting, and he says it in a tone that no one dares to argue with, and stop to listen. Concept: Ralph repeatedly has to make deals with savagery which is represented as Jack and his mask, and he soon tires of having to draw Jack back from becoming savage. Theme: Civilisation is constantly at war with savagery, which links in to the time at which the novel was written: the time of the Cold War. Style: The writer’s style is to use the exclamation marks and the dashes show the two clashing, and their different feelings. Jack uses exclamation marks as a way to convey the excitement and thrill/power of the kill, he also uses dashes as he sometimes cannot find the words to describe how he’s feeling, whereas Ralph uses dashes to convey his frustration and anger at the fire being let out. Writer’s intent: The writer’s intent is to show that USA had to make several deals with the Soviet Union, this is shown through Ralph and Jack.

(Theme) The moral message is that without adult control, the boys are turning to violence and savagery as is shown when Jack is proud of his violent ways. (Style) The writer uses foreshadowing to show how Jack is in a downward spiral and will continue to become more violent as his time on the island continues. (Writers intent) It is the writers intent to show that when forced into a challenging environment, the boys are becoming savage and have lost sight of their moral compass.
L: This would make the contemporary reader feel apprehensive as Jack is portrayed as a threat to life on the island.

This demonstrates that although Roger has a tendency to bully others, he retains a sense of morality. The fact that the remnants of civilisation holds him back coincides with 17th century philosopher John Locke’s theory, which posits that nobody is inherently evil - everybody is born an empty vessel and their characteristics are determined by the environment surrounding them. However, as Roger has a desire to inflict harm on the Henry, Golding, the omniscient narrator, foreshadows that once Roger regresses into total savagery something much worse will occur.

P:Roger treats Henry as Henry treats the animals. Roger wants to go further, to actually hurt Henry, but civilisation holds him back.
E: this is demonstrated through the quotations, ‘Roger stooped, picked up a stone, aimed, and threw it at Henry- threw to miss’, and ‘Yet there was a space around Henry... into which he dare not throw’.
E(1): The concept is to imlply how the boys maintain their old values and morals of order and civilisation, despite their environment and longing to turn to violence and savagery. Also how Roger restraints himself from hurting Henry, shows he still upholds his innocence. On the other hand Henry seems somehow guarded by society and adults from the savage nature that resided within Roger.
(2): The message Golding is trying to present is the fact that the boys are descending into savagery, however still proving they are pure and harmless at this point.
(3): The style and use of the quotation, ‘dare not throw’, indicates how Roger still holds onto his morals and innocence society has instilled in them.
(4): The writers intent is to demomstrate Locke’s theory, and to show their deterioration into savagery. Also to display Roger’s inner urge to satanically harm or even kill, that is evident this early on in the novel.
L: the reader is meant to understand their savage urges and their civilised structure is deteriorating.

This quotation represents the fact that jack’s downfall to savagery has taken over him and his civilisation. Golding has emphasised that jack has completely forgotten about the fire and turned to hunting by using a list which represent his thought process and therefore his actions. The writer would have wanted the reader to notice Jack not being disciplined and almost uncontrolled in his own action.
L: the reader at the time of the book being written could have link the to possibly irresponsible leadership shown by the nations leader at the time of the nuclear war.

His choice has devastating consequences.
E: “ You and your blood, Jack Merridew! You and your hunting! We might have gone home—“
E: The concept here is that civilisation and savagery can never go together, so Ralph ( the symbol of civilisation) and Jack ( the symbol of savagery) will always clash. Piggy, who says this quotation , a voice of reason and intelligence, sides with civilisation against savagery. The use of repetition when Piggy repeats ‘you and your’ while addressing Jack emphasises that Jack has been corrupt by killing , and it seems to be the only thing that matters to him , he has disregarded being rescued and taken back to a life of morals and civilisation. Golding’s intent was to show that there can only be one leader, and that he agrees with John Locke’s theory

E: “You let the fire out.’ This repitition made Jack uneasy. He looked at the twins and then back at Ralph.”
1. Jack is unaware of the complication that he caused by going hunting rather than watching the fire. Therefore the solidarity within the group has been interupted.
2. Jacks descent into savagery has increased rapidly, this is shown when he seems unbothered by the fact a ship has passed. Their reunition to civilisation has been delayed.
3. Golding uses syntax to convey the panic and doubtful feeling within Jack.
4. The writer intended for the reader to feel a similar reaction to the boys, and to understand the desperate need of Ralph to get off the island, which foreshadows that they know of the sudden descent into savagery and fears for the loss of civilisation.
L: The comtemporary reader would have a more profound insight into the deeper meaning of the event, because of the political situation.

P-Jack hunts pigs to feel strong, powerful and needed in the group.

E-“Kill the pig, spill her blood, cut her throat”

E- concept- is the jack needs to hunt to feel powerful and needed so he hunts to feel useful, to have a use in the group not a tag-a-long who lets everybody else do the work for him. Theme- the message given in this’s how he has a chant to keep order in place so it’s not savagery killing anything he sees it’s an order and plan on how to do it to keep civilisation which is unity which compares to being in a group. The style of language the writer uses is grimacing words using “the” which is a determenor article it’s not to kill any pig is “the” pig, that pig, not any other pig, the verbs used are short n direct to “kill”, “spill” and “cut” there’s no confusion it shows Jack knows exactly hat he wants to do but not because of his love for killing he wants to do it to show he’s not weak, that he has strength and can help out in the group. This could be cause he doesn’t want to feel like an outcast and end up alone, his fear of being abandoned he needs to be in the group to feel strong.

( jack becomes belligerent)
