Asking for help is sometimes hard to do due to many people's "Self Sufficiency Syndrome", or the, "unwillingness to ask for help or delegate because of the belief that no one can do it as well as you can."(Hilliard City Schools "Unit 3: Communication and Coping Skills" 13)

It's also important to offer assistance to others because they might feel apprehensive about asking for help even though they could really use it. This can sometime be just as hard as asking for assistance, but easy ways to assist others is simply listening to their problems, offering to do jobs or chores for them, volunteering, and helping with small things like holding a door open. Keep in mind that not everyone might need help, and rather than insist when your offer is turned down it is best to walk away.

I have always been good in math, but this past month was a really hard unit and i wasn't understanding some of the content. I knew that resources were available for me to get help, like going to my math teacher or asking older friends who already took the class, but I really wanted to do it by myself. I was also afraid that my friends might have thought that I was dumb or wasn't trying hard enough, which is also why I didn't go to them for help. In the end I went to a math help center during lunch one day and I ended up doing really well on the quiz and test. I had to get over my fear of asking for help as well as put my trust in someone else for me to be successful.
