One major transformation was the new, expanded role of television. CABLE TELEVISION, although available in the 1970s, became standard for most American households. This change ushered in a whole host of new programming. The 1980s had more vivid shows and also introduced some of the most popular shows today, such as the renown animated sitcom, The Simpsons (1989), which is still has new episodes airing to this day.

- US History.org

The 1980s marked a very critical time in the early stages of the video game industry. Arcade machines and consoles became very popular and people would spend hours and lots of money playing them. Hanging out at the arcade was like the 1980s version to the modern day LAN party. 1980s is sometimes referred as "The Golden Age of Arcade Games". Games started out very simple and the players objective was to get the highest score possible. In 1983 game consoles went dormant due to them lacking quality, but in 1985 came a huge game changer. Developed by Nintendo, Super Mario Bros was one of the biggest leaps forward in the video game industry. It was one of the most iconic games during the 1980s, and changed the format of video games forever. It set the common basis to what most games have today; a plot, protagonist, and antagonist. To this day the Mario franchise still remains very popular among gamers. Other iconic games were PAC-MAN, Q*bert, and the very renown arcade game Donkey Kong. Iconic consoles include the NES and Atari 7800.

Due to the advancement in computers it became easier for for movie developers to create computer generated images (CGI) instead of using puppets or models. There were movies such as Back to the Future (1985) and 2010: The Year We Make Contact (1984) that made speculations of how the coming 21st century would be like. They depicted it in a stereotypical way by including flying cars and easy-to-accomplish space travel. Other iconic movies include E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), and the Indiana Jones series (1981-1989).

The article "Designed to Addict" emphasized on people get very addicted to social media and how it can be detrimental to their life. Despite the internet being introduced in the late part of the 80s, and social media still over a decade away, there were still things people would get very addicted to. Arcades were a huge thing back in the 80s and people would spend lots of hours and especially lots of money at them. When a player makes progress in a game, their dopamine level increases, causing them to continue playing and putting more money in. Arcade companies made lots of money through peoples addiction of the games.

The 1980s fashion tended to have a heavy emphasis on expensive clothing and vibrant colors, making it very distinctive to the previous decades. This style of clothing became known as "Punk Fashion", and is some what reminiscent to today's clothing style. Women would commonly apply heavy make up and mini skirts were popular among them. Men would often wear track suits, polo shirts, v-neck shirts, and would frequently roll up their jeans to expose their slouched socks, which was common among both genders. When it came to hair, women would have a high or side pony tail worn with a headband, another common hairstyle was puffed out hair. When it came to men's hair, it tended to be shag and mullets were popular, especially for working-class men. Some men even had Mohawks to have a more "punk" like appearance.
