Brian suffers from both physical and mental pain. He experiences mental distress when he discovers his mother is cheating on his father. This mental suffering takes him so far that it drives him close to committing suicide. He is physically harmed when he is stabbed by a porcupine, attacked by a bear, and rammed by a moose.
