She chose to lose 'it' even though it went against social and religious status quo of maintaining one's innocence until marriage. In today's society, it is considered odd or even bad to wait until marriage to have sex, but in the 1950s and in Latin America especially, where culture is heavily influenced by Catholicism it was just about the worse thing one can do. Sure, it was her brothers who pulled the metaphorical trigger but they did so based on the societal norm of defending your family's honor. She knew that the man responsible for taking her virginity would have to be killed to restore her family's honor, so she lied to protect the one she loved. If this was the truth, Angela would not be to blame as she was mearley telling the truth. Angela's false allegation prompted his murderer, but the twins were the ones who committed the actual crime. They chose to kill Santiago of their own volition, but it could be argued that societal pressures cohered Pedro and Pablo.
