My Reflection

In the evening I was walking slowly into the reserve. The wind sighs against my skin, cool and soft, was carrying the scent of soil and leaves. Every breath was feeling fuller there. Birds were chirping across the branches, I stopped, was listening, and I felt as if they’re calling me into their world.

The trees sway gently. I let their rhythm calmed me. Then I saw — a magpie, black and white feathers gleaming against the dimming light. She was moving carefully, head dipping toward the earth, scratching, searching. I watched her, and it felt like I am searching too, though I don’t know what for.

The evening deepened, and the sky folded into shades of blue and gold. The reserve held me in silence, in sound, in the wind, in birdsongs. I carried this stillness inside me and was thinking about slow down as Murray Schafer explained in his video “Listen”.

Philosophical Articulation

When I walked through the reserve I realized that every creature is a seeker. The trees seek sunlight, wind seeks path, Magpie seeks sustenance, and humans are seeker too. We, too, belong to the same rhythm of the earth. I remembered how we were seeking shade during summer days when we were playing outdoors in childhood. Play connected with nature and effects too by nature. In this world we are inseparable from nature. Philosophically, it reflects the idea of Greenman (2005) The natural environment is an ideal place for children to engage in creative play. Young children learn more from their surrounding and environment.

During my visit, I walked through a natural reserve. The experience revealed a hidden choreography of life: the wind, birds, trees, and even my own steps unfolded in an intricate dance, inviting me to observe the rhythm of nature and my place within it. The wind’s brushing against leaves resembled a gentle dance guiding all creatures in silent synchrony. Connecting this with Murray Schafer’s listening. Through this lens, the reserve became a stage where all life participates in continuous, interconnected motion, suggesting that rhythm and flow are inherent to existence.

Exploring nature with my senses

Sight: colors of the sky, movement of leaves, patterns of light and shadow, the magpie digging in the soil.

Hearing: bird chirps, rustling leaves, whispering wind, distant sounds of nature.

Smell: damp soil, fresh grass, earthy scents of trees and flowers.

Touch: wind on your skin, grass under your feet, rough bark of a tree.

Feeling (internal/emotional): calm, curiosity, wonder, connection

According to Ruth Wilson Play in natural environments promotes the holistic development of children as it fosters growth in all of the developmental domains. In the natural environment encourage children to notice, touch, hear, and smell. Turn nature into a stage for creativity — rocks, leaves, birds, soil can become characters or props. Walks, jumps, twirls, or mimicking animals are part of the play.

In My Future Practice

In my future practice I will use natural elements as tools for creativity — sticks as wands, leaves as instruments, birds as inspiration. Will encourage children to notice, question, and interact with nature rather than just watch it. Through play engage with movement, rhythm and sound. As wind and birds reminds me connection with nature, movement and sound already there. I will help children to create their stories what they will see in the nature. Imitate bird calls, wind sounds, and animal movements; use rhythm and dance to explore nature.
