This graphic novel covers the topic of self-esteem in young adults and discusses some of the inevitable changes everyone goes through with losing and gaining friends, gaining confidence and going through life and the challenges that go along with it. I was initially drawn to this book because the main character knocks her two front teeth out at a young age and I also knocked my front teeth out at a young age, but after reading this book it goes much deeper and discusses a lot of topics that young adults can relate to. I don't think I would bring this book into my classroom to do a lesson on, but I could suggest it to my students to read in their free time if they choose.

I loved this book because the princess was awesome and the last thing she says to him is awesome "...but you are a bum!" I would use this book in my classroom, it shows a smart resourceful young woman. The role reversal of the typical princess story is great. It was written in 1980 and ahead of it's time.

The book is about the relationship between a boy and a tree who provided the boy with the resources he needed throughout his life. It is beautifully written; however, more recently at the 50 year anniversary there has been discussion on how this book reflects a one-way relationship.

This is a comic strip collection detailing the adventures of Calvin and his stuffed tiger. The text appeals to me because it is a book that I could enjoy as a child due to the fun and engaging art style and the funny stories. As I got older I was then able to appreciate the more mature underlying themes of the story. I believe I could use this book in a modern classroom. It is engaging visually, while also introducing complex written subjects that may go over some student's heads, but can be appreciated as they get older.

Many of the words are written in fonts that are animated to add to the story. I also found that they were all fast-paced stories that kept me engaged.

This is a part of a series of different books written from the perspective of young girls in different historical periods in Canada. I loved history as a child and these books made history come alive as I could put my young self into the main characters. The writing was also very fun to read, you felt like you were in the family. I would use this book in the class but I would need to explain that it does come from a privileged perspective and doesn't show a complete version of history.

What appealed to me about this book was the mix of humour and emotion throughout the story. Written by a young Canadian author, the book is grounded in seemingly real-life scenarios while still adventurous. Ponyboy's struggle between doing what is right and wrong conveys a strong message about decision making and following our moral compasses.

The book that came to mind when asked what my favourite book was from my childhood is Franklin's Blanket. This book begins by showing all the ways which Franklin uses his blue blanket and why it is so important to him. One day, he wakes up and realizes he cannot find his blanket and is quite upset. In the meantime, Franklin's dad offers his old yellow blanket for Franklin to use instead. However, the yellow blanket was not the same as his blue blanket. A few days later Franklin found his blue blanket which he had used to hide his brussel sprouts that he did not want to eat for dinner one night. He gave his blue blanket a good wash after that. The book ends with Franklin speaking about how despite his blue blanket being old, it is still so important to him.

I chose this book as my favourite from my childhood as I used to read this book with my mom at bedtime frequently. Franklin's blue blanket reminds me of different things I have held onto from my childhood. I found (and still do) this book very comforting. Thanks for reading!

I may equally pull it out if our class is having a hard time following through on tasks assigned as there is a moral lesson in this book about being accountable... and it is repeated so often, I'm not sure I would as the teacher explicitly state the moral, but instead let this theme of accountability spread through the classroom.

A story about an extraordinary fish with beautiful shiny scales who was vein and ultimately lonely. He realized if he shared his beautiful scales with others he could admire their beauty as well as enjoy their friendships. As a child I enjoyed the beautiful imagery and that the rainbow wanted to share his beauty. I would use this book in my classroom as it is a great piece of lit to facilitate discussion and help teach the lesson that relationships mean more than possessions.

I loved the Harry Potter series as a kid (and still do), when I was younger I read the earlier books since they were made more for youth and I grew up reading the books as they got more serious.
As most of you may know, this book is about Harry Potter an orphan boy who doesn't know he he's a wizard until he is visited on his birthday by another wizard named Hagrid. Hagrid takes Harry to Hogwarts, a school for young wizards. Harry then embarks on a journey of discovering his powers and meeting new friends. He must find the philosopher's stone to prevent the resurrection of Lorde Voldemort.

Princess Elizabeth loves her Prince, Ronald, and wants to marry him until one day he's taken by a dragon. Elizabeth sets out to save him from the dragon but when he kidnapped Ronald, all of her princess dresses were burnt so she must wear a paper bag for her mission. Once she meets the dragon, she tricks him by coaxing his ego and after showing off his fantastic skills of fire breathing and flying around the world, he gets so tired he falls asleep. Princess Elizabeth is able to walk right into Ronald's prison to rescue him! When Ronald sees Elizabeth, he ridicules her paper bag and dirty appearance, he doesn't even thank her for the rescue. Instead he tells Elizabeth to come back when she looks like a real princess. So, Elizabeth informs Ronald that while he may have nice clothes, neat hair, and does not look like he just trekked through the lands and outsmarted a dragon, he is in fact, a bum. They do no get married in the end.

I loved and still love this book since it showcases a female hero who takes on a typical male gender role. At the end she chooses to leave her bummy prince and go on her own independent way. I would bring this book into the classroom since I think it's important for young girls to see themselves as strong and capable without relying on male figures.

Celebrating our students' successes, no matter how big or small, can make a huge difference in their future. Also, it reminds us that what you might think is not impressive could be very special to someone else. Lastly, it demonstrates how kindness is contagious.

Also, he is obsessed with spiders. Looking back at the books i loved as a kid, it seems they all had elements of fantasy, mystery, and horror. I think I enjoyed the escapism, and I also connected with stories about outsiders, people who couldn't fit into the norm.
I started reading the beginning of this book again and would not bring it into my classroom because it deals with some pretty intense themes that may be too frightening for some students; however, I would not discourage students from reading it and the rest of the series; I know I personally read through all 13 books in a month when I was in the sixth grade so I really connected with them.

In this story, a child describes the emotions they experience when in a dark spot. The anger within the child is personified as a little tiger that grows when it doens't get its way, resulting in unfortunate consequences. The story resolves when the child learns how to train the tiger and make ammends with those who felt the tigers wrath.

The nameless child and the tiger are the only characters of substance in this book; other characters are drawn as silouettes. I like how relatable the book was - everyone feels low sometimes and needs to learn how to deal with frustration and anger. Additionally, the main character is designed to be generic in gender and diverse in cultural background. I wouldn't hesitate to use this in the classroom as it easily lends itself to discussing strategies for control of emotions.

He also uses a sowing needle as a sword. I liked this story because it was from an underdog perspective, and sends the message that anyone can do anything if they set their mind to it. I think the book would be a good fiction novel for students to read on their own time but I don't believe it would be as useful in the classroom simply because of its length.

Personally, this book appealed to me because I never enjoyed reading without visual cues but this book was written in the format of a personal journal with sketches. The pig is originally set to slaughter but the spider saves him through writing various messages in his web which makes them famous.

I loved this book growing up because it was a very touching story as usually spiders are creepy and people generally hate them, but this spider was able to save the life of the pig. Also, I grew up on a farm and my favorite animal was a pig so it made me happy that the pigs life was saved.

I would use this book in my classroom as it emphasizes the importance of friendships and being there for people, that by even doing seemingly little things for someone, you could save their life. Additionally, it shows the importance not to "judge a book by its cover". Had Wilbur the pig disregarded the spider just because he's 'scary' and different then his life would have never been saved. This book shows the importance of accepting everyone and not judging them before you know them because they could be there help you.
