When considering the quote by Alvin Tolfer himself, it reminds me that those that do not speak the language or have the necessary fluency of the 21st Century will not survive in this ever so fast changing society we are living in. "We need to move our thinking and our training beyond our primary focus and fixation on the Three Rs—beyond traditional literacy to an additional set of 21st-century fluencies, skills that reflect the times we live in," (Jukes & Churches, 2011, p 17)

Benefits of Teaching Students to UnLearn and Relearn

Throughout the years, our traditional educational system has created a vast amount of highly educated useless people. " The primary focus in school has become about mastering content and learning through memorization in a tightly controlled instructional environment, (Jukes & Churches, 2011, p 1). Taking the initiative of moving away from the rote traditional learning where I would be in control of how and what the students learn will allow students with the necessary opportunity to practice skills through trial and error, learning from mistakes in order to create knew schema to share with others. Shifting the responsibility of learning from me to my students will allow students to emerge into critical higher order thinkers. Student success in work, life, and play will will highly depend on their ability to use learned information and apply it to new relevant situations and problems.

Challenges

With any new task at hand, challenges are presented. Shifting the responsibility of learning on to children in order to create independent learners in itself can be challenging. Understanding and changing our minds as to the shift in the digital age and how significant it is in education and how students learn can be a challenge as well. Simply reading and writing is no longer enough. The inadequate and meaningless standardized testing presents challenges. The high demands on both teachers and students to master concepts for inadequate and useless standardized tests continues to be one of the most frustrating challenges of all. With the elimination of standardized jobs, education will be forced to change the development and implementation of curriculum as we prepare students for a life beyond school.

The 21st Century Learner

The 21st Century classroom must support a combination of cognitive processes and technologies that enable life long learners. The traditional skills once valued in the classroom are no longer relevant to the 21st Century Learner, many have been deemed obsolete. "Education has to be about identifying the skills, knowledge, and habits of mind that all of our students will need to be successful in their life beyond school, (Jukes & Churches, 2011, p 17) Creating a classroom environment where students can become critical and analytical thinkers willingly able to creatively solve real time complex problems, along with collaboration and communicate with a world outside of their classroom walls supports long term educational goals for the 21st Century Learner.
