The main characters of this story are O'Brien, Winston and Julia.
Winston: The character in 1984 you know from the begging who is doubting the government. He falls in love with a girl named Julia which is against the law. They get caught and he gets tortured into loving Big Brother the government. "I Have not betrayed Julia". ".... feelings toward Big Brother. I hate him." These quotes show that he tries to be loyal to Julia.
O'Brien is a very mysterious and very brutal man. Winston thinks he is part of the resistance, so they meet up and he brings them into the resistance. It turns out that O'Brien was a spy and he takes Winston to convert him to the side of Big Brother. "You couldn't, You couldn't! Its impossible." This is what Winston said when he found out that he betrayed him. "No, winston, you reduced yourself to it. This what you accepted when you set yourself up against the party." " Nothing has happened that you did not foresee." This shows he is brutal and that he was a spy.

Totalitarian government

A totalitarian government is a government that lets no individual have freedom. Totalitarian governments are ruled by power and fear and are extremely strict. When it was found out that one of winston's co workers was a thought criminal he was erased from existence. Another example is when the police broke into Winstons home because he broke the law by having sex with Julia. He was tortured and help for a long time for his crimes. this also shows that this is a totalitarian government because they don't have any freedom.

One theme of 1984 was that we necessity of controlling lies in history and information. I believe this is a theme of the story because one of the ways that Big Brother stayed in power is always winning and being right about everything. They would have people go back into books and newspapers and other articles and change it for their gain.

My ideal government is a system where everyone is equal but if one works harder than others will be rewarded. One where there are punishments for discrimination anywhere harsh enough to make them stop, but not to ruin there life. One with a series of people that approve and repeal laws, elected by the people. Any one can vote over the age of 15 as long as they have a certain degree of knowledge. One where you can have your own personal life, but also be apart of a whole.

The Qin dynasty Vs. 1984

The post apocalyptic government described in the book 1984 ruled by the party has many similarities with the Qin dynasty of 221 to 207 B.C.E. ruled by Shi Huangdi. The people of both had little to no rights. Shi huangdi was a very strict ruler and if you did something against the rules you would be found out and punished harshly. In 1984 they had the telescreens. The telescreens would sense your movement, voice and thoughts. If you were to even to think about breaking a rule you could be arrested and even killed. 1984’s version of strict rules were a lot more severe, but they were similar. Once in during the Qin dynasty Shi Huangdi buried 460 Confucian scholars because they spoke out against him. The burying alive of people shows the brutality of punishments, so does the torture of Winston.

The difference between 1984 and the qin dynasty’s rights is that in 1984 you basically weren't allowed to do anything except eat sleep work. In the qin dynasty you were allowed to have a love life and friends.

1984 and the Qin dynasty were also similar because they did an extreme amount of work to have the upperhand when fighting. Shi huangdi had the great wall of china built just so they had the upperhand against nomads. The party went through jurassic changes to hundreds of thousands of documents, and had to convince the people that they were always at war with certain group.

Another similarity between 1984 and the Qin dynasty is that they both have corrupted governments with abusive leaders. Big brother is the iconic leader of the party and they party can do what they want. If they want sex from any women the woman had to give it to them. They were very rich and had whatever they wanted. The people higher up in the social ranks of the qin dynasty could also do whatever they wanted. The emperor could tax anybody any amount anytime, and he could start a war against any nation if he really wanted to.
