I think that "The Renegade" was appealing to John B. because John B. was very angry at the world for how decrepit it had become. In "The Renegade" the whole town was against Mrs. Walpole because of her dog, who they wanted to torture, more or less. John B. was very against his town as she was, however you could also say that the town was against John B. as well, like how the town was against Mrs. Walpole.

A person who is a "renegade" is a person who is a traitor, betrayer, etc. In the story, Mrs. Walpole would be the renegade to the town, because it was HER dog who killed their neighbour's chickens, however, because of the way the story is being told, it seems that the entire town, including her daughter, is full of traitors.
3. It's expressing how before she felt that she was okay, and doing fine, and then things started to feel off, as described in the beginning of the story. Then things really took a curve and went downhill fast, people saying things like "scratch his eyes out" and "she's going to get shot", talking about the dog. I feel like "The Renegade" appealed to John B because he is a realist. He sees the world from a neutral stand point, where things aren't bad but they aren't good. This story shows the bad things that can happen if you don't control your belongings. At the end of the story, Mrs. Walpole is taking suggestions on how to punish her dog, her daughter steps up to say "And you get big thick nails like spikes and hammer them into the collar." John B would find some weird, twisted satisfaction in that because they aren't sugar coating the punishment. 
2. The definition of the word "renegade" is: a person who deserts and betrays an organization, country, or set of principles. The renegade of the story is the dog, he went against the principals that he was taught. In the story the dog kills some chickens and that makes the townspeople angry. The dog deliberately goes against what he was taught. In doing that, he has to pay the price. 
3. Mrs. Walpole is talking about the weight of killing the dog. No one wants to kill their pet. When they kill the dog it's like she can feel them pulling the rope, it's a symbolic bond between pet and owner.
