Simulation in nursing education is the use of interactive technology and life-like computer operated mannequins to simulate patient care scenarios. The use of simulation technology gives students an opportunity to learn in a modeled patient care environment which allows the student to develop nursing skills and critical thinking without the concern of making mistakes and causing actual harm to the patient.

*Refine Skills--Nursing students can practice skills repetitively, learn from their mistakes, and make adjustments in their techniques without causing harm to human patients.

*Independence-- Students are able to practice decision-making skills in regards to healthcare on their own

*Confidence-- Learning in a simulation exercise boosts future RNs' self-confidence and esteem resulting in improved patient care once they enter the RN workforce.

*Cost--the high cost of opening a simulation lab may be unobtainable for smaller nursing programs.

*Communication and nurse-patient relationship-- At the end of the day, the student nurses are not gaining the valuable face-to-face time with patients. Communication skills are not as authentic with a simulation mannequin.

*TruMonitor
--Through this simulation activity, teachers can choose the scenario and difficulty level. If students have a second mobile device, it can be used as the patient monitor. This simulation focuses on students learning how to differentiate cardiac rhythms and in-depth hemodynamic monitoring.

*Resuscitation!
--Resuscitation! is the award-winning virtual patient simulator that makes learning medicine addictive! Resuscitation gives you a case presentation of a patient who is ill, and you play the role of the health care provider. You are in control and can take a history, perform a physical exam, develop a differential diagnosis and administer therapy to treat the patient’s underlying problem. You can place the patient on a monitor, start IV’s, perform procedures, administer medications, obtain radiology studies, EKGs, and a LOT more.

*Advantages--Free to users, however, more storage requires a monthly membership. The application gives the user many color and background options which is much more appealing to the eye than older applications such as PowerPoint.

*Disadvantages-- User must create an account which will ultimately lead to more junk mail in your e-mail browser. There is some user difficulty. There are not many buttons or options to format slides in a better fashion.
