What things are you now able to express in Spanish that you have learned in Spanish II?

Through completing this course I am now able to understand basic information and conversation concerning school, families, where/how people live, pastimes, shopping, food/eating, communities, traveling experiences, and disasters. I am able to express information encompassed by these topics in the past, present, and future tense by also applying what I have learned in Spanish 1. Our work in Spanish 2 was primarily centered around the preterite and imperfect tenses which aid in describing previous experiences. The imperfect is used in descriptions of feelings, age/time in the past, what you were like in the past, weather, simultaneous actions, background descriptions, habitual actions, mental activities, and physical states. The preterite is used to describe actions with an ending, how long something occurred, interrupted actions, when/where something took place, the beginning/ending of an event, and for basic narration. This allows for more elaborate and effective story telling in conversation. When no longer limited to the present tense you are able to relay information and details more effectively. I also have a new understanding of how to adequately compare objects and experiences through the use of màs que and menos que. Additionally, I am able to use a combination of direct and indirect pronouns to avoid redundantly restating the subject in my speaking and writing. I learned about reflexive verbs that demonstrate actions one is doing to his/herself. I also learned about hace+time+que expressions which provide information about how long someone has or was doing something. Through early grammar presentations and applied practice throughout the course in speaking and writing assignments I understand the difference between por and para. Por shows motion, place, manner, substitution, duration of action, and indefinite time periods. Para shows destination, persons, future, time limits, purposes/goals, uses, functions, comparisons, and opinions. We also discussed the difference between saber and concocer, verbs that both mean to know. Saber is applied when describing knowledge of facts, info, and skills, while conocer describes people, places, and things. I also learned about the para +infinitive expressions that allow one to describe what the do in order to do something else. I learned about the imperfect progressive that indicates an action that was in progress in the past that was interrupted by another event and also perfected my use of tener+que expressions to describe incidents/actions where I had to do something. I am able to describe what my school, teachers, schedules and classes are like and what we do in each class. I am able to describe what clubs my school offers and which activities I participate in. I can describe how I found a place to live, what it is like living there, where it is located, and why I like/dislike it. I can describe who is responsible for what chore and what objects/appliances are required to do so. I can describe where other people are from and what languages they speak. I can describe where people worked, what they did at the job and what their salary was like. I can describe what myself and others were like as children and things we used to participate in/do. I can describe different place I like/dislike to visit and the varying experiences I have in them. I also can describe simultaneous actions with knowledge of the word mientras which means while. I can describe my experience at a market or store, detail what I bought, and whether or not I enjoyed it. I can describe what I eat to stay in shape as well as what exercises I do. I can express whether or not I go to the gym. I can express what clothes I bought, what they looked like, and what material they were made of. I can express which articles matched each other, which were in fashion, and compare the articles of clothing by using demonstrative adjectives. I can describe what I need to do to prepare for travel and my experience while traveling. Lastly I can describe different incidents/accidents/injuries, how they were resolved, and who came to help.

What differences have you seen between the Spanish language and your native language?

In English nouns are not assigned genders, they are simply just words that describe people, places, and things. However in Spanish nouns are considered either masculine or feminine. An el article will accompany the noun if it is masculine and a la if the noun is feminine. Adjectives must match the gender of the noun in order to be considered grammatically correct in Spanish. An adjective should end in an "a" or "as"if it is describing a feminine noun and an "o" or "os" if describing a noun that is masculine.
In English our nouns and adjectives do not have to agree in gender and number, but this is the case in Spanish. For example, In English we could say "The boys were tall" or "The girls were tall," but in Spanish we have to say "Los chicos eran altos" and "Las chicas eran altas"

What did you find interesting and exciting about the Spanish culture?

I think what is interesting about Spanish culture is how family oriented the people of Spain are. Compared to the US Spain has a laid back lifestyle. Spaniards take siestas in the middle of the day to go home to eat, relax, and refresh before going back to work. Businesses in Spain close at around 2pm to allow for this. The US does not have a similar tradition. Additionally, meals in Spain are eaten later than they are in the US and are very slow spaced and social. This allows for time in which families and friends catch up with one another! In the US only certain businesses close on varying days and times to allow their employees to rest and relax. Even still most time off is granted solely on holidays. In Spain the siesta is a widespread tradition and practiced by many. I think we should come up with something similar in the US because I love to nap!

What do you hope to learn if you continue to study the Spanish language?

If continuing to study the Spanish language I hope to expand my vocabulary beyond what was covered within this class. While the modules in this course covered a wide variety of material and a broad range of subjects, I still feel there are more words to learn and different topics to study. I would also like to learn more about speaking in the future tense because I feel like I have a more solid, strong understanding of speaking in the past and present tenses! I would like to study medicine and I feel that being bilingual will help me advance in that field. Some of the topics we covered in Spanish II are also still a little confusing to me, like the DOP and IOP, so I would also like to gain full understanding of those things. Over all I felt as though I have learned a lot from this course and I am generally excited to continue learning about Spanish in my future courses etc.

Class Reflection

Through taking Spanish 2 I have expanded my knowledge of language greatly. I really enjoyed the online format, and felt that it worked great for me as a student. Having a course that is flexible and being able to personally contact your teacher were both extremely helpful. My teacher provided me with links to websites for extra help and responded to all questions/ provided feedback very quickly. The different types of assignments held me responsible in learning to speak, write, and read in Spanish. If I continue to study Spanish I hope to build upon my knowledge and maybe one day be able to speak fluently! I’d like to be able to seamlessly provide instruction for others and be able to ask more questions in Spanish. One thing that I have learned through this course is to never translate Spanish literally and to never trust online translators as they a plagued with mistakes. I also learned about new verb tenses and how to speak/write about past experiences. I liked how we were given opportunities to correct assignments and that live classes were required every two units. I also think having projects at the end of every two units was a great way to review and help us with our final project. The only improvement that could be made to the course would be working out the technical difficulties with collaborate ultra. I encountered less of them as the course progressed but I would still occasionally get kicked out of the course room during the middle of a session. Things that helped me learn in this course were the diverse assignments, quizlets, and communication with my teacher when needed. I still need work with pronunciation and some grammar, but I feel that I have taken a lot from this class. I also think it was interesting and unique to incorporate information about Spanish culture into classwork. In order to continue to develop my Spanish I plan to continue taking Spanish courses, especially at the collegiate level. I will hold onto all the notes and information I have gathered from this course and will use it as a foundation and huide as I advance into higher level courses.
