If Fern was not in the story her whole family dynamic would be changed. She offers a voice of reason in her family. Wilbur's destiny could be changed as well. If Charlotte didn't exist, there would be no web- Wilbur would be sent to the slaughterhouse without a second thought, but Charlotte encourages the community (and the world at large) to reconsider their decisions on animal cruelty. I think Charlotte and I are similar in that we're empathetic and care about the people (and animals) around us.
