I chose this painting of The New Bonnet because it showed a lot of what we were discussing in class. We learned how hard it is for lower income families to be able to afford education for their children. A lot of the times they go to the lower budgeted schools. We also learned how there is inequity in the distributions of fundings to the schools. This painting reminded me of that. A woman brings home a new bonnet, that it seems that they could not afford. The parents look distraught as if the money should not have been spent.

From module: 2

Connections to text: “Where You From” by Renee Watson. “Corduroy hand me downs and keepsakes” (International, 2020). Everyone comes from a different home, a different culture, and a different race. It’s a part of what makes us who we are. Where you're from is important as it also shows how others can help if they come from a lower-class family. Income can also play a role in how we grow up and determine where we are from.

Learned from peers: What I learned from my peers from this was how different households can struggle based on their living situations. Some families may struggle more if their parents are separated. They might also struggle if they have any other family members living with them.

This movie was chosen because it connected with our learning about segregation in schools. This was the first thing that came to mind when we were discussing separation and low budgeted schools. There were more Black students at this school, as it was low income, the teacher spent a lot of her own money to provide these students with an equal education.

From: Module 3

Connection to text: “The Fight Against School Segregation”. In the video it discusses how the students were segregated in the schools and out. The budgets were low so there was a high student ratio in the class and there wasn’t much to spend on resources. The families of the White students choose to send their children to better schools for a better education. This furthered my learning as I didn’t recognize how schools today can still be seen as segregated. It opened my eyes to recognize how certain areas and certain schools are higher White populated than others.

Learned from Peers: One thing I learned from my peers is how to get support from the schools. One thing that can be done is reaching out to other businesses. They can donate to the school, and it can support the teachers. This is one thing that I didn’t think of myself and was informed of an organization called Donors Chose and its people helping donate to the classrooms.

I chose this movie because it connected with what we learned about the low budget schools closing down. We learned how the lower budget schools had less educated teachers, more students per class, and lower test scores. This movie fit perfectly. It's about a principal who is set to change his school for the better by bettering the test scores, an ensuring an equal opportunity for his students.

From Module 6

Connection to Text: From the article by Tara Mathewson, it was discussed how schools in the same district get unequally funded. This is a big inequity in education. The movie Lean on Me makes perfect visuals on how schools are low funded and them being at risk of closing. The principal from Lean on Me changes his low budget school and gets the grades on the students higher to save his school. This movie expanded my learning by seeing how everything can influence the school, and how big of a job principals have.

Learned from Peers: Schools get funded from taxpayers' money, and as taxpayers if we knew that the money was going directly to the schools, we would feel better paying higher taxes. I also learned that not everyone feels this way. It can be difficult for people to pay higher taxes, and they will say no, no matter where the money is going. This can lead to a decrease in school fundings.
