Volunteers need mentoring to guide them through a journey where they are welling to explore, but they are searching for a direction; aiming to realize their potential and what is out there.

I think it is important to prevent volunteer work from becoming a tourism or neo-imperialist missionary project. Perhaps the best way to achieve this is to encourage a culture in the workplace that makes explicit which undesirable behaviors need to be avoided. Then, an attitude of the coordinator would be necessary, since the selection process to the training stages. Another idea would be to prevent voluntary work from harming the local population more than it helps. Certain types of work can be done by the local population and can even help to boost the local economy. In this case, it would be more interesting to think about encouraging the arrival of people who can help to train the local population so that they can carry out tasks independently. In certain cases, coordinators may be attentive to scenarios where volunteers could even support activities coordinated by local population, learning with them.

In my experience as a volunteer, often NGOs take as many people as they can and the volunteer don't have enough to do and get bored and lose the initial commitment.
- Schedule periodical feedback sessions between volunteers and the leadership to make sure you are constantly improving the operations and volunteers feel that their voices are being heard.

-Encourage volunteers to interrogate and share(!) their own motivations for volunteering and ideas about why they believe this particular NGO is well-suited for them.
-In my experience, volunteers' attendance tails off when they feel like they're not making a 'difference'. So, conversations about what 'difference', 'individual agency' and 'effect' might (not) look like for the volunteer can help ensure they are assigned more more suitable tasks. Relatedly, I think it's also really important to explain to the volunteer the importance/effect/ consequence of many apparently menial/standard tasks that they will inevitably be asked to help with. Often the whole point of 'boring', unspectacular, 'non-transformative' everyday tasks is that they are essential and (quietly?) transformative for that very reason?
-Although of course practically impossible to completely achieve, I do think that NGOs with less or even non(!)-hierarchical internal power structures can be excellent ways of ensuring that volunteers (and benefactors alike) feel more involved, heard, and responsible.

Integrating volunteers into an organization can be arduous. An effective method that I’ve seen being used is having a screening of the volunteers before welcoming them on board. I once had to do an interview to volunteer at an organization. At first I was slightly apprehensive about being interviewed when there were a plethora of places that I could have invested my time and that didn’t require a formal process.

As I reflected on the organization post-interview, I realized something amazing—I leaned way more about the organization that I had anticipated. The interview gave me an opportunity to share what qualities and attributes I would bring to the team as well as what resources they have that would support my interest as we mutually progress to the same goal.

Additionally, when one aspires to integrate effective volunteers into an organization, they must show respect for diversity and inclusivity in all aspects. A person may be interested in expending their time for a cause they believe in, but it’s important to allow that individual to feel respected and valued. I stand by the quote, “A person who feels appreciated will always do more than what’s aspected.”

Lastly, a servant-leadership approach is ideal for the success of integrating anyone, volunteers or otherwise into an organization. This engender empowerment and motivation to all involved and would therefore lead to success!

In my last answer, I said "enlightenment" aka a practical fluency with how our inner emotional/mental experience isn't separate from what's being reflected in physical reality. The practical side of oneness. Because that is probably too esoteric and out of context, I want to add that a great place to start is to make sure volunteers have emotional maturity and are motivated from an adult position. Our inner teenager is always trying to emulate, to look good, and to get external validation (all the wrong reasons to volunteer) whereas a spiritual adult is someone operating from a self-chosen set of values (and nourished by the emotions those values spark inside). So in a sense, the best thing you can do to increase volunteer quality is to help them grow up and connect to their own deeper selves. It's not about virtual reality that gives a preview of the aesthetics (although there is room for that too), it's about fostering an integrity in people that allows them to respond gracefully to any given reality. If you get that inner "function" right in people, then a more optimal outcome will follow. You can contact me for more at chris@catterton.net - I was referred by Nada
