How to organize a lesson in a very diverse class by Teacher Academy

This padlet aims to gather all your ideas based on the personal situation of Linda Carlos, one of the participants of the course. Her students come from a variety of different countries such as Russia, Estonia, Kenya, Nepal and Iraq and from different levels of learning the Finnish language. Due to this great diversity in her class, most of the time all the students are studying different things or different levels of the same subject. What would you do in this particular scenario? Are you in a similar situation? If so, how would you create/organize your classes? Think about it and share your ideas below. Let´s collaborate together to find the best solution for this very common scenario!

In one of my classes I've this situatiation, that is I've devided my students into two groups: the 1st is formed by foreign people who don't know English language at all; the 2nd group is formed by people whose second speaking language in their countries is English. In the previous group I teach basic grammar with the aim to let them get practice with oral and writing skills by doing simple exercises both written and oral. For students who speak English well I focus my teaching on reinforced their grammar knowledge. Of course both worksheet and grammar forms are different. It's a bit laborious but this teaching way is the only one for me to let my students fill their gaps in this language.

I ALWAYS TRY TO HAVE STUDENTS WORK TOGETHER RATHER THAN SEPARATELY. I KNOW THAT SOME STUDENTS WILL DO BETTER THAN OTHERS. THE LEVEL OF THE STUDENTS VARIES AS DOES THEIR INTEREST IN ENGLISH. THEREFORE I TRY TO CATER FOR THE MAJOR POINTS THAT I WANT TO COVER AND I AM AWARE OF THE FACT THAT SOME STUDENTS WILL GET 10% AND SOME 100%. I USE MAINLY ORAL PRACTICE AND I TRY TO MINGLE GOOD STUDENTS WITH WEAK ONES AS EXPERIENCE HAS SHOWN THAT PEER INFLUENCE IS STRONGER THAN THE TEACHER'S.

In my school very often children turn up all during the year (two arrived last week...), so we have to face the challenge, especially in higher classes, to teach them basic language while the others study various contents... I think that CL is a precious resource, here, chiefly when students are used to it and you can evaluate their job and their mays of interacting less often, so you can take time to follow the new arrived students with a one-to-one approach, based on body language, simple games and real life enactment...
Luckily enough, this year we can also profit from few hours of a special teacher to introduce new students to Italian language. I must remember that, at the beginning, these children have usually a strong motivation, since the language is a mean to "survive" and get in touch with their schoolmates that, at the beginning, are also very patient...

Hi! I'm an italian math teacher.I have been teaching since 1992.I come frome Rome (IT)In my school in the last time there are some pupils of different culture. They mostly come from China.I often use cooperative Learning with these students.I think this metod is particularly beneficial for any student learning a second language, because activities promote peer interaction, which helps the development of language and the learning of concepts and content.

I haven't faced such a challenging teaching situation but I think, like other teachers here, I would use cooperative learning in order to keep learning fun and entertaining for all the pupils. The most advanced students might help the newly arrived ones which would help all of them to improve their level in a fun and collaborative way.
I would also try to assess each student individually not based on a single test but based on how they progress in order to encourage them.

May be half /a third of the time you use for teaching in a very old fashioned way - to provide the kids with the basics of the language. The other time find ways to give them individual/partner work and add some games. (And find a second teacher!!)

It is a great challenge and, from my humble point of view, the "golden" (not brighten) part of education: EDUCATE IN DE DIVERSITY AS EQUAL IN RIGHTS AND DIGNITY.
We dont´t usually like to take students out of the class, we mostly like inclusion classes. We know than most of times it is difficult but we cosider more importat to feel yourself part of the group. In some specific cases we take some pupils in small group to adapt the teaching to their learning process.
I also like making "new students" fell important, so we dedicate different moments during the year for sharing information about their different countries and languages. The more confident they feel, the more motivated they are.

Dear All, I teach in a secondary school, first level, called CPIA, Centre for Adult education. Most of the students are migrants coming from Africa, Asia, Latin America, from 16 years old up. As teaching method I often use learning by doing and cooperative learning, in order to help and encourage cultural exchange. It is normal, in a multicultural environment, to find people of different cultural level and with different competences in italian language. Therefore, I always organize cultural activities in a way that students help each other and I mingle good students with weak ones. During my lessons I usually promote and implement cultural integration, interculturalism. Multi vs inter..coexistence vs integration, multicultural society vs intercultural ones.
