Quote from pages 31-60

"He shouts at the top of his lungs: You're a tennis player! You're going to be number one in the world! You're going to make lots of money. That's the plan, and that's the end of it. He's adamant, and desperate, because that was the plan for Rita, Philly, and Tami, but things never worked out. Rita rebelled, Tami stopped getting better. Philly didn't have the killer instinct" (57).

Pages 31-60 described Andre Agassi's tough childhood with his persistent and controlling father who pushed him become the best tennis player in the world. This quote perfectly represented his father's state of mind and how he was almost relying on Andre to become successful which is why he pushed him that much harder. One reason Andre's father pushed Andre so hard was because he truly believed he could become successful but it was also because there was no one left after Andre so this was his last chance. This quote also portrays a constant theme that occurs a lot throughout the childhood of Andre Agassi before he goes to the Nick Bollettiere Tennis Academy. Andre's father constantly controlling his life and dictating everything he does. Another effect of his father's investment in Andre was that there was a lot of pressure in Andre to do well. His father spent so much time and money to perfect Andre's tennis game so there was a lot of pressure on Andre to always perform at his best level and beat everyone he faced which was not always the case, especially at the national level. He would lose matches which would disappoint and frustrate his father. All of this pressure and control from his father along with the fact that he did not even like tennis made his childhood pretty rough.
