Prior to Covid-19 the key concerns in our organization were how to develop content for our clients that was culturally focused and promoted belonging. When the pandemic hit it was clear that education was key to closing the wage gap for women of color. Because of COVID-19 many women of color left the workforce but at the same time, they were forced to use the internet in ways they hadn't before.

COVID-19 impacted Midwest Mujeres to dream a new dream. We started as Wisconsin Mujer, a social engagement social media enterprise, and we rebranded to becoming Midwest Mujeres because we wanted to call in all the intersections of our identities and pay tribute to the influences of Chicago, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis. Because of the slow down, I was able to pursue funding and create the annual storytelling event of ¡Yo Quiero Dinero!

Midwest Mujeres responded by hosting various online events and Zoom panel talks. Our subjects ranged from Anti-Blackness in the Latino community to Latino Arts to public health issues like mothering during the pandemic to Latina sexuality. Many of these talks you can see on our YouTube channel.

We used the funding to pay for the space, and speakers and interpretation of the Yo Quiero Dinero event on June 3, 2022.

This speaker, Adina Appelbaum, is an immigration lawyer and she came from New York to speak on how people can invest their money without using a social security number. This is very important for so many of Latino/a/e people who use ITIN numbers for their finances. And it was a primer for many first generation people in the room.

We have the program structure to continue our educational courses, but we need the funding and the internal structures and support to continue. We provide opportunities for our members to showcase their stories through events, podcasts,, and blogs. We teach women how to write their stories, create or expand their online platform, and become a public speaker. Come to our next event on Friday, June 16, 2023, at MyArts theater in Madison, WI.
