Dally's Motivation

Dally is motivated by Johnny to live and not throw his life away. He wanted Johnny to stay safe and not get thrown into jail. Dally wanted him not to get into trouble. He didn't want Johnny to end up like him. It shows this when Dally helped Johnny after he killed someone. Dally usually would probably not help anybody.

Once Johnny died, Dally felt as if he had no reason to live, so he committed suicide.

"Johnny," Dally said in a a pleading, high voice, using a tone I had never heard from him before, "Johnny, I ain't mad at you. I just don't want you to get hurt. You don't know what a few months in jail can do to you. Oh, blast it, Johnny" he pushed his white-blond hair back out of his eyes--- "you get hardened in jail. I don't want that to happen to you. Like it happened to me..." (76). If he didn't care about Johnny, he would not commit suicide. All of these things show that Dally really cared about Johnny.

Dally is very strong and protective of his friends. He always makes sure his friends are okay and aren't in trouble. He shows this traits when he helped Johnny and Ponyboy escape their town from the cops. He is also very tough and stronger than most other people. It shows this when he grew up on the streets and went to jail at the age of 10. “He never talked about his past or being in jail that way--- if he talked about it at all, it was to brag. And I suddenly thought of Dally... in jail at the age of ten... Dally growing up in the streets…” (77). Most people probably would go crazy after going through all of that. All in all, Dally proves to be very strong and protective of his friends.

Dally's Personality

Personality type: “The Entrepreneur” (ESTP-T)
Individual traits: Extraverted – 59%, Observant – 76%, Thinking – 71%, Prospecting – 62%, Turbulent – 68%.
Role: Explorer
Strategy: Social Engagement
There are many times in the story that show these Traits. Dally is very turbulent because he went completely mad after Johnny died. This also happened when Dally stormed off after failing to prank Cherry. “ Dally raised the gun, and I thought: You blasted fool. They don't know you're only bluffing. And even as the policemen's guns spit fire into the night I knew that was what Dally wanted. He was jerked half around by the impact of the bullets, then slowly crumpled with a look of grim triumph on his face. He was dead before he hit the ground. But I knew that was what he wanted” (131). Another time is when it shows that he thinks a lot when he came up with the idea of escaping to a church far away. In the end, Dally seems to have most of the traits the personality test shows.

Dally is very bad at controlling his temper and emotions. It shows this when he committed suicide over Johnny’s death. Dally just couldn’t take it. It also shows this when Dally stomped off after trying to get Pony and Johnny to help him prank Cherry. This stopped him from trying to achieve his goals to prank Cherry.

“ Dally raised the gun, and I thought: You blasted fool. They don't know you're only bluffing. Majority of people will not go insane like Dally was. These examples show that Dally is very bad at controlling emotions.

Dally Isn’t the protagonist or antagonist but he helps the protagonist, Ponyboy.

He is also a dynamic character. He starts off not caring too much about anyone, but after Johnny gets hurt, he started to care about Johnny. ” Oh, blast it, Johnny" he pushed his white-blond hair back out of his eyes--- "you get hardened in jail. I don't want that to happen to you. Like it happened to me..." (76).

Dally is a round character. His personality changes many times throughout the story. At first he is very bad, he fights people and pranks people all the time. Like when he tried to prank Cherry. Then, after Johnny kills Bob, he agrees to help them. He is then very caring to Johnny. After Johnny dies, he is so sad, he commits suicide. But I knew that was what he wanted” .(131) Dally shows all of these traits in the story.

Conflict

There are many conflicts in the outsiders. The type of conflict is person vs. society. The conflict is between the socs and greasers. This conflict is very important to the story because without it, Johnny wouldn’t of had to kill Bob. If they didn’t kill Bob, they wouldn’t of had to run away. The socs and greaser would also not have a big fight. In the end, Ponyboy finds out that fighting does no good because of those events. “‘And tonight... people get hurt in rumbles, maybe killed. I'm sick of it because it doesn't do any good. You can't win, you know that, don't you?’ And when I [Ponyboy]remained silent he went on: ‘You can't win, even if you whip us. You'll still be where you were before--- at the bottom. And we'll still be the lucky ones with all the breaks. So it doesn't do any good, the fighting and the killing. It doesn't prove a thing. We'll forget it if you win, or if you don't. Greasers will still be greasers and Socs will still be Socs’“ (98). This is an important part of the story and would not of happened if there was no conflict.

Integral setting

The integral setting in the outsiders is the bad relationship between the socs and greasers. It can also be the different living conditions between socs and greasers. Socs with very comfortable and rich lives while the greasers have barely any money and bad living conditions. Without the bad relationship, Johnny wouldn’t have had to kill Bob and there would be no rumble. Those things are very important in the story. The different living conditions also matter because without it, the greasers probably wouldn’t be so mad and jealous at the socs. Ponyboy was even mad at Cherry because of her comfy life with riches compared to his less comfortable life."’I wouldn't want you to see him. You're a traitor to your own kind and not loyal to us. Do you think your spying for us makes up for the fact that you're sitting there in a Corvette while my brother drops out of school to get a job? Don't you ever feel sorry for us. Don't you ever try to give us handouts and then feel high and mighty about it’" (110). If it was a different city with more diversity, these event would never have happened.
