With the mistrial white and green color, the cover vividly interpret that a girl wants to talk to others about some facts; however, obviously, we cannot see the mouth of that girl, with indicates she is not allowed to talk under the cover of a tree. Also, I believe that the growing tree symbolized the teenagers who are eager to grow up. The title “speak,” showed the whole stories is about the truth behind an incident.

In the beginning of the book, the writer begin with a view that a girl who does not like school. That attracts me because I have the same feeling with her. And this first impression allows me to think that the main character is a cool girl. From the fist 12 chapters, I can know that the girl is a little more mature than other kids who are at the same age with her. She is always finding someone to sit with her. Finally, she gets a friend named Heather. Although their characteristic are totally different from each other, they are going along well with each other. Melinda thinks that Heather is a little annoyed. One day, Melinda encountered two girls that were aggressive because Melinda called cops in a summer party, and brother of one of those two girls got captured and then he got fired. I am really curious about this part because there must be something happened in that party, which Melinda can not speak it out. This may be the theme of the book. At the end of the book, Melinda may speak out what happened in that party.

At first the book provide me a girl who hates school . I can't fell much at first because I don't have any experence as her. But later when she was reject by her best friends. She was always trying to find a friend, who can be with her. Finally she find a girl named Heather. Even though they have diverse character , they go alone well. Our main character think she is a little annoying. I think she is the one who support our main character. The story was developed when Melinda was encountered by tow girl. Melinda called cops in a summer party which cause one of the girl's brother lose his job.
I think the story of the summer party will be the main theme of the story. As i keep reading I should be able to know what happened.

Melinda is a girl in high school, and this book begin with her first day of a new semester. Melinda is not popular in school, no one want to sit with her or be her friend, except Heather. Heather likes talking with Melinda, about joining club or something. Melinda used to has alot of friends, they are a clan, but now , all of her friends don't play with her any more. Melinda is really sad about it. She is not a girl that teachers would like, because she doesn't reply words, she thinks school rules are stupid and she even steal late pass from her English teacher. Melinda wants a friend, not a very close one, just someone who like to stay with her that makes her not to be awkward sometimes. The chapter opened with Melinda's way to school, but the tone is not cheerful. Her first school day is terrible. The writer says that Melinda bites her lips and cannot say a word for many times. I thinks those are article clues which can show something later. Also, the writer mentions Melinda's old friends ingnore her, but never talks about the reason, which makes me curious.

When I started to read this book, I felt confued. I wondered why this young gril was hated by other people, why her best friend hated her, and why people around her always laughed at her. I continued，and then I got some clues. Melinda once called cops in a summer party and someone was captured and fired. My heart told me that it was the turning point, and the key that why Melinda got into hot water now. But What happened in this party? Why she needed to call cops instead resolve by herself? Maybe she fond someone took drugs or did something illegal. I did not not, but I believe I can find the answer in the rest of the book. To be honest, the begining of the book is queit .....orgeneral: a poor girl was alienated by her friends and no body can understand her, even her parents and teachers. Finally, she will be accepted by others and get a new life, I guss. However, I was gradually appealed by its plot because it seems far away from my life and it made me feel fresh. I also thought the word choice of the writer was pretty daring and interesting. :)

The author uses imagery of being silenced to describe the main character, Melinda. She bites and chews her lips until they bleed. She tries to speak, but the words will not come out. Her “throat squeezes shut,” struggling her explanations. Pulling her lower lip in between her teeth, Melinda wishes that she could swallow herself. All of the behaviors of Melinda shows the Melinda’s passive side and fears of speaking out. Besides, Melinda’s classmates also blame her for breaking up their party by calling the cops. Her friends have their own conceptions of what happened at the party. Melinda strongly believes that her friends do not want to hear her explanations about this event. Moreover, talking about what happened requires experiencing the ashamed thing again and admitting it really happened to her.

Besides, there are also some positive sides. Melinda is excited because her art assignment make her subject “say something, express an emotion, speak to every person who looks at it”. Art provides an way for her to release the pain. She starts painting watercolors of trees that have been struck by lightning, so they appear nearly, but not completely dead. These paintings shows Melinda’s first effort to express her feelings about her terrible experience and the damage that she has sufferjed.

At the beginning of the book. Melinda communicates with her parents mainly through the note book. And several elements show she seems a depressed person. And then, we knows that she seems have met some bad thing since she thinks she always have a nightmare. And she has bad relationships between herself and others. Next, she thinks she can not finish the work her teacher asks her to do since she can not draw a health and happy tree. All of these show she met bad thing and can not escape these results brought by the bad thing.

Analysis
I still do not know what happened to the girl. The idea of the book is a kind of obscure. The style of the book which show the story of the book through psychological detail( the thinking of the girl) attract me. I want to find out what real happen to her.
