Content) “Fingernails,” by Tang Siu WA (Central Ideas and Literary devices in poetry)

A central idea for Fingernails would be that the author is trying to convey how bad and poor people lived. Examples of this on the paragraph would be “Sleeping outside is a reality, The tents were likewise broken, Their sweat runs down our bodies, Just as young, as poor, as filthy, Negated people are all alike.” This quote shows people lived under poor and bad conditions. I am interested in analyzing the poem “Fingernails,” by Tang Siu Wa. I have the most context with the poem with all the research and video we watched, allowing me to understand the conflict on a deeper level. Also how this protest is still going on still today and is a currant event. It's so interesting seeing what happen in real time.

Beaumont to Detroit (1943) - Langston Hughes

"Beaumont to Detroit" involves the black civil rights struggle in America during the time of WWII. Hughes draws a comparison between the autocratic leaders (Hitler, Mussolini) and the U.S and asks why black people must fight them both. Hughes attention towards the racial split in America despite the ongoing world conflict brings out the question, how can a nation divided by color join to fight a common enemy, and more. Hughes connection of black injustice in America to WWII highlights the severity of systematic racism in the United States.

Symbolism-use of symbols to represent ideas

Conflict- A clash of between 2 opposing side
