A theme you could see in this novel is sin. To start of, Hester commits adultery with Dimmesdale. Because of Hester's sin there are many consequences she has to pay. One of the consequences is that she now has a daughter. The people in the town she lives in take sin seriously so they have to punish her. One of her punishments is that she has to wear a letter "A" which symbolize her adultery.

Throughout the story it changes for example it also meant able because over the time she was doing a lot in her town.
