During the 1950s, the music was introduced to rock & roll, which completely changed the landscape and music to come. Another significant moment was the introduction of now-significant singer Elvis Presley. A lot of the songs during this time were just that, songs. They mainly were seen as just another type of entertainment, saying nothing special. That all changed though with the introduction of rock & roll. Rock & Roll, like the greaser subculture. laid the groundwork for the rebellious and provocative music to come.

Jailhouse Rock sang by Elvis Presley.

A major change occurs in the movie industry during the 1960s. Movies start to make viewers a lot more uncomfortable. The movie Psycho shocking unknown audiences with its at the time brutal violence being depicted. Another movie, Night of the Living Dead, sparked massive discussing about the message of the movie. With critics thinking it could be an allegory for racism in America or even the horrors of the Vietnam War. No matter what its message was, films now started to spark discussion with its viewers. Countering the passive nature of the messages from movies a decade before.

Night of the Living Dead directed by George A.

The fashion around this time once again reflecting the values of the 1950s. Many of the clothing
had very dull colors, women's clothing tried to emphasize their figures, men's clothing were more loose fitting and working class-styled, and children's clothing either were casual or formal depending on the gender. There were not a lot of clothes that strayed from these standards. One massive change in style was the introduction of the greaser style of clothing. Greasers mainly had greased back hair, leather jackets, and leather jackets. A sign of the rebellious clothing styles to come.

American Actor James Dean

The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and many, many more, the 1960s were a revolutionary time for music. Much of the anger accumulating during this time was channeled through the music produced. Songs about feminism, the Civil Rights movement, or the Vietnam War, all were made to much acclaim. It was not just songs about social change, new genres like psychedelic rock, surf music, and blues rock were just some of the new types of music created during this time period.

Come Together sang by John Lennon

Color started to pop during this time for fashion. More vibrant colors being present on the many clothes people wore. For women's clothing, the miniskirt and minidress was introduced, giving their clothing a much more playful and freeing look in comparison to older styles. A weird development in men's clothing was the introduction of more military-styled clothing, mainly with the jackets. This was partly inspired by the popularity of the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Mick Jagger. Unlike the other two categories, children's clothing stayed relatively the same except for brighter colors and girl's clothing becoming more casual. Later in the decade was when the fashion became influenced by Eastern styles. This movement worked in tandem with the hippie movement since they wanted to wear more non-consumerist, natural clothes.

British Actress Audrey Hepburn

Movies like Signin' in the Rain, Seventh Seal, or Cinderella. Not many of the notable movies revolutionized filming but they still had a great impact. The messages the movies were trying to say were not as nuanced due to the time. It was only until the next decade that the messages be more nuanced with movies that started to make the viewing audience even uncomfortable.

The Seventh Seal directed by Ingmar Bergman

By this point, the sudden changes in music is no surprise. What is important is the how, how it happened and how it originated. Without the introduction of rock & roll making listeners energetic, the music of the 60s might not be the same. Young people in the tail end of the 50s slowly became more rebellious, especially with a lot of them being drafted to fight in Vietnam. Since the war continued in the next decade, the Civil Rights movement gaining much more steam, and an overall message of peace around the world created an environment the music we know could exists. Music has always been a way to channel strong emotions, and no other decade proves that like the 1960s.

Due to teens becoming more rebellious around the 1960s, the clothes started reflect that idea. Since in the decade before there were not many styles that were not either casual or formal. The only type of notable rebellious styles was the greaser subculture. Just like before, the massive change can be contributed the many socials movement going on at the time and also the Vietnam War. With the introduction of the hippie movement in response to the violence in Vietnam and the rise of consumer culture, fashion changed significantly for young people.

Movies since the early 20th century have a been a staple in the entertainment industry. They also usually give a good reflection the time period they were made in. 1950s and 1960s movies are no exceptions. The movies created in the 1950s are important but unlike the 60s, they never tried to go against the status quo. It was only until the 1960s was when movies started to say something. Why someone may ask? To put it simply, the Vietnam War revolutionized society as a whole. With movies now making viewers uncomfortable due to the either dark or serious matters being portrayed on screen. Reflecting the rebellious attitude many young people had at the time, not wanting to fight in Vietnam or have America in Vietnam. For better or for worse. movies still hold a great picture to what time was like back when they were made.

These two decades fit the definition of polar opposites, conformity vs. rebellion. The 1950s saw a time of peace after the Second World War. A time were everything had to be in line or it would not be accepted. This is contrasted heavily by the 1960s. A time drenched in social movements like the Civil Rights movements, and violence as seen in the Vietnam War. Many aspects of life represent the differences between these decades. What is going to be looked at today are the changes the came about in movies, fashion, and music, and why they happened.
