- In 1898, after Puerto Rico finally gained control of themselves. Finally having a constitution as well as voting rights, would soon go downward and really lead the way for how the way Puerto Rico is now
-The US came into the rescue of Puerto Rico when it was still in control of Spain (Spanish-American War) they had came in stating that they would stick to their promise of protecting the liberty, life and happiness of the people of Puerto Rico.
-Once Puerto Rican's saw that the US was on their side trying to help their situation, they sided with the american's and started helping by attacking Spanish owned stores.
-But to their shock the US had not met their expectation of taking care of Puerto Rico.
- When Spain ceded Puerto Rico to the U.S. in the Treaty of Paris. The U.S. ignored the new, democratically-elected local parliament of Puerto Rico in favor of creating its own colonial system.
