After hearing that the South had the ship, the North hurried to build the ship <em>Monitor</em>.<br>3. The commander of the <em>Merrimack, </em>Flag Officer Franklin Buchanan was shot by a bullet in the thigh when he went to shoot his pistol at the shoreline. <br>4. The commander of the <em>Monitor </em>was wounded by a shell fired by the  <em>Merrimack, </em>which exploded next to his cabin.<br>5. Neither sides actually won the battle, but the iron clads proved their worth in the battle.</div>]]></description>
