As a white, cis-gendered female, I am in an extremely privileged position within this wide-spanning network. Despite my research and active participation to learn more about topics of racism, I recognize that I will never be able to understand the impact or implications that media depictions place on people of color.
When exploring the artists and examples (from the past, and today), this project helps me to realize my part within this network. Like our class readings have mentioned, racism is like a fog that constantly exists in the air. As a white individual, I must do my part to be actively anti-racist within society and educate myself and others on relevant topics concerning race in society. I must actively reevaluate the things I have learned in my past, and the way this has shaped my identity. By acknowledging my own flaws, and researching ways to combat them, I can attempt to clean some of the fog in the air. This work impacts the way I view the world, and how I create meaning of what I see in the media. Especially during this time in our society, I feel as though this work showcases the active (and somewhat cautious) attitude that we should have when consuming media. This network (which doesn't even include all minority identities) makes me more aware of the privilege I have experienced throughout my life, and how others do not get the same treatment that I often take for granted.

As shown across this network, I included a few of the notable social implications that stem from the depiction of minorities within the media. These highlighted examples showcase just a few of the countless implications that exist due to misguided media representation.
Despite the racial "progress" we have experienced as a society, there are still clear examples of racism that go unnoticed in society. Political cartoons (of the past and present), the tropes we see in television, the media headlines we read, the books we show our children, and the commodification of heritage and culture, create and reinforce stereotypes that create untrue social identities of people of color. These stereotypes aid in the creation of racist ideals that impact our education system, healthcare systems, financial systems, representation/leadership, and many other important parts of our society. They reinforce ideals of white supremacy in an already whitewashed society.
