Tunnels under the Pirates' House were used to shanghai, or kidnap, men into forced service on ships.


The Pirates ' House was a popular inn for seafarers near the Savannah River, where the Trustee's Garden was. There is evidence of underground rooms or tunnels, but there is conflicting evidence as to what these features were used for.
