         <description><![CDATA[<div>COVID-Slide and other “gap” worries already existed pre-covid for 60% of students.  These students need evidence based INSTRUCTION and INTERVENTIONS if they are to accelerate learning and close academic gaps.  <br><br>Let’s be careful not to waste student time and tax payer dollars chasing tutoring that lacks an evidence base using tutors who lack any training in reading and language.  How will schools know exactly what a student needs before pushing instruction and interventions down on them?  SCREENING.  Who is screening? How are they screening?  Step by step...before we push schools to adopt or purchase “tutoring” that lacks an evidence base.  First, let’s define the evidence base.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Up to 17% of students have dyslexia and a larger number — ~40% — struggle to learn to read using Balanced Literacy.  When a school’s multi-tiered support system includes core reading PD/programs that are explicit, systematic and include phonemic awareness &amp; decoding instruction, there is a good chance struggling and dyslexic students will learn to read and NOT Need expensive special education.  <br><br>If you use balanced literacy programs like F&amp;P, LLI, Reading Recovery, Lucy Calkins (reading/writing) and you want to ensure equity (ALL students reading) and you want to avoid sending students to special education, take a hard look at your core instruction and make changes ASAP!  There’s no need to disadvantage students and send them to special education where, honestly, they never catch up.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>“<strong>Spelling Lessons in Reading Programs Are Potentially Harmful to American Children<br></strong><br></div><div>Here’s a first-grade lesson from one of the most widely used reading programs in America, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt <em>Journeys: Common Core</em>(2014, Unit 14, Lesson 17, T103) [Spelling Lesson Words—Long e (ea, e, e_e, ee): me, be, read, feet, tree, keep, eat, mean, sea, these.]<br><br></div><div><br></div><div>There are numerous problems with this lesson. Some of the words such as <em>mean</em> are developmentally inappropriate as spelling words unless the kids are above-grade-level readers. As Noah Webster would say, it’s a “promiscuous arrangement of words in the same table.” (Webster, 1798) The lesson included the word <em>theme</em> in a dictation pretest for Whole Group instruction on Day 1 but none of the dictation words on the Day 1 pretest are in the spelling list! Who on earth thinks this is appropriate spelling instruction for First Grade? Why waste the whole group’s time with a dictation pretest with upper-grade level words that aren’t seen again in the lesson? <em>Theme</em> as a first-grade spelling word?  Seriously? Can you imagine how this impacts children’s <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/basics/motivation">motivation</a> to spell and write?
