"Consider your friends’ and relatives’ advice, but realize that in the final analysis, it is your life, not theirs. You undoubtedly have met people who are doing work they love, and they are joyful and fulfilled. You have also met people who have made an unhappy choice, perhaps followed someone’s advice that sounded good at the time—but wasn’t. For them, every day is “a grind.” Your goal is to find the career that puts you in that first group, a career that brings you joy and meaning."

I chose this quote because it really resonates with me in the season of life I am currently going through. I never want to automatically disregard the advice that my friends and family give me, but I don't ever want to let their thoughts and opinions control the life decisions that I make. It's a delicate balance and I've been dealing with that it a lot lately. This quote also resonates with me because I never wanted to settle for a career that I wasn't completely happy being in. That's why I am so glad that I went with my gut and chose to go into the Music Education field where I get to do what I love everyday.

"In our society, schools teach us early on to be quiet and listen to others, to take notes on what others say, to study hard, and to do well on the test. But finding the vocation that is right for you is not about knowing what others believe; it is about learning about yourself."

I love this quote because it explains what should be done more often in our schools today. Learning the basics of reading, writing, math, science, and history is important, but helping a student find their true passion in life is even more important. Unfortunately, a lot of times schools are more focused on training kids to do well on standardized tests that they don't have time to help students find that calling.

I'm overwhelmed with joy when I see my students doing well and my heart aches when one slips away from me. I do believe that if they are supposed to come back to me one day, then they will.

Letting your creativity teach you is one of the best ways to learn.

"The foundation of one’s emotional intelligence is self-awareness. A person’s ability to recognize a feeling as it happens is the essential first step in understanding the place and power of emotions. People who do not know when they are angry, jealous, or in love are at the mercy of their emotions."

I strongly agree with this quote and am a strong believer in that a person should never let their emotions control them. We should control our emotions, so that they won't cause us to do things we regret. Having self-awareness is they key. Self-awareness is something that every one should have, but unfortunately not everyone does.

One study of 36,000 people found that “worriers” have poorer academic performance than nonworriers. (A load off your mind, no doubt!)"

I can really relate to this quote because I feel most energized and motivated when I am being productive. I don't like the feeling of letting all my energy go to waste. I even start to feel crappy about myself if I'm not being productive in anything for an extended period of time.

Once our eyes are open to this though, we can then control what parts shape us and what parts don't. We have control over what influences us and what doesn't. We are in control of becoming the person who we want to be instead of allowing society to tell us.

Integrating children of different backgrounds mirrors our ideal of a democratic society. We all need to put our differences aside and focus on each other as individuals instead of what side of the spectrum we are on. Once this begins to happen, it will enrich learning experiences for us all in every area because we can actually stop and listen to a person and truly hear what they have to say.
