This chapter mainly explained how the Norris family was influenced by Alabama. Belvin, Michele's father, and his 5 brothers went through a lot in Ensley, and this chapter shows their life there. They were a happy family, but they also had to face a lot of racism and other obstacles. They joked around, but knew when to be serious. Belvin's father, Michele's grandfather, also did whatever he had to do in order to keep himself and his family safe. This included bringing Michele along to protect him from racism. Michele reflects on their experiences and history in Alabama with understanding and interest, and relates it to hers.
