a) Mia is four years old and has a fun personality. There are times that she can be shy and other times she is sociable to the other children in the classroom. Mia speaks both English and Spanish and when she is playing with the other children she speaks the language the child feels most comfortable with. She is exposed to both languages at home and school. Mia's dad speaks more Spanish than English and Mia's mother speaks more English than Spanish. Her grandmother speaks to her mostly in Spanish which gives her a lot of language exposure.

b) See attachment

c)When I asked the mother of the child (we will call her Mia ) for the interview I was surprised that she said yes right away . Mia's Mother speaks more English than Spanish and my goal is to build a better connection with the parents . The interview with Mia's mother went very well. I learned how important it is to carry on traditions for every culture , it contributes a sense of belonging and comfort . This interview encouraged Mia's mother to want to volunteer in the classroom and even one day she would like to come and talk about her families culture. I'm very glad I was able to do this interview.

Mia is a bright young child and it was a pleasure to get to know more about Mia and her family background. We recently had a parent teacher conference with Mia's mother and it was very successful. When we conduct a parent teacher conference we always talk about the child's strengths goals and what we will do to help Mia get to those goals. Mia has a lot of strengths such as having an understanding of language (receptive LLD1 ). She follows the directions of the teacher. When the teacher asks Mia" Can you pass me a tissue box please ?" she gives the teacher a tissue box.Mia also has a strong reciprocal communication and conversation(LLD4). She was playing in the dramatic play area and was pretending to be a hairdresser. Mia asked the other child if she would like her hair long or short. One other strength that Mia has is expressing herself in English(ELD2). She drew a picture and the teacher asked what she drew.Mia said " I my mommy and my dog papito.I would inform Mia's mother how well she is doing in the classroom. Her mother mentioned that she brought Mia to school because she wants her to learn more English. Mia has come a long way since she first started school. She started out to be very shy and timid and now she is a social butterfly . We are continuing to support Mia in the classroom by providing activities of her interest such as the ABC mystery box. This activity will help with Mia's language development and letter identification because it has objects that can relate to the children. We also let Mia's mom borrow the game and she was surprised how engaged Mia was with the game and was thankful four our support.

Being a preschool definitely has its perks. One of the perks of being a teacher is that you have the opportunity to teach from the heart. Part of teaching from the heart is having no child left behind. Working in a head start preschool has helped me get a better understanding of what dual language learners need. It is important to make every child feel safe when they are entering the classroom and one of the ways to make a child feel safe is speaking the language that they are most comfortable with. Imagine coming into a room not only with people you don’t know but with people who don’t speak your home language. How would you feel?

It is important to provide additional support for children Dual language learners because the loss of the first language for young children can negatively impact children's progress in school. It can also be damaging for cultural reasons that are personal, familial or religious. It is very fortunate that there are many early childhood educators can help support children and their families by developing strategies to include a child's home language while also helping them learn a new language.
