In the American Civil War, Oklahoma, was a territory claimed by the Confederate States of America. Although it was claimed by the Confederates, tribes here decided by themselves to support the Union or Confederates. This territory was home to many Native American tribes due to the Indian Removal Act, implemented on May 18th, 1830. The Native Americans were not a huge contribution in the war as not many soldiers were enlisted into the Confederates military. There was a battle in Oklahoma, The Battle of Honey Springs. This battle was between the Union and the Confederates. The battle began on July 17th, 1863. There was 181 Confederate casualties and 77 Union casualties. The Battle at Honey Springs was the largest battle in Oklahoma. The Union was victorious and gained control of the territory

The Battle of Round Mountain was the first battle fought in Native American territory, or in other words, Oklahoma. The battle was fought on November 19th, 1861. There is not much information on casualties. There was another semi-major battle here, The Battle of Cabin Creek. This battle was fought on September 18th, 1864. The Battle of Cabin Creek was fought multiple times as the purpose was to capture federal supplies that were en route to Fort Gibson. This was the last semi-major battle located in Oklahoma during the Civil War.

There were many important people in the Oklahoma area but perhaps one of the most important figures was General Stand Watie as he recruited the Cherokee Tribe into the Confederates which overall made them a stronger nation. He mainly ordered the tribe to help the Confederates hold back Union troops. General Stand Watie was the last leader to surrender in the American Civil War which also showed he was determined to fight for his beliefs.

John Ross, a Cherokee Tribe delegant and leader, was also very important. As a Cherokee Tribe leader, he was left with the responsibility to also help make decisions for the tribe and to do what is in the most favor for everyone. John Ross helped decide where the Native Americans were going to be forced to move into after the Indian Removal Act. He also helped influence the tribe and allowed Stand Watie to mount them with weapons to defend against Union troops. He was of much importance as he was one of the only english fluent delgants.

The war in Oklahoma was a bit different overall out of all of the states. In Oklahoma, there were less battles and there were no railroads for transportation. Oklahoma contributed in this war by the Confederates asking the Native Americans to be armed, which would help the Confederates. They helped hold off Union soldiers too. Overall, the state of Oklahoma contributed to this war by lending troops, and helping the Confederates.
