After reading "What is Implicit Bias and What Medical Professionals Can Do to Address It" and "How to Reduce Implicit Bias" I can personally reduce implicit bias when dealing with patients in my job is by fully understanding and listening to the position they are in. Sometimes when I'm having a bad day I tend to judge without listening to their concerns and I need to take a step back and listen without judgement. This is really important to help me respect the patient and understand that what they're going through is a big deal to them even though it might not seem like it to me.

After watching, " What is Bias and What Can Medical Professionals Do To Address It" and reading "How to Reduce Implicit Bias," I can reduce my implicit bias by increasing my contact with individuals from different groups. I would like to say I am a pretty social person, but due to the pandemic, my social anxiety has increased and it has become difficult to speak to new people. After completing the assignments, I realized I was not around many people of different groups back in high school, mainly because there was minimal diversity. But now that I have access to interact with people of different backgrounds, I aim to tackle my implicit biases by being more open to trying new experiences such as joining clubs and going to activities around campus.

According to the video, "What is Bias, and What Can Medical Professionals Do to Address It?" implicit bias are ingrained habits of thought that lead to errors in how we perceive, reason, remember, and make decisions. Society places a big part in this. In my opinion, I feel that I tend to easily assume things or ideas about people when I don't really know them well. Sometimes I feel that I am not aware. However, after reading through the module, I am more aware and I know that I can definitely work on reducing implicit bias. One way that I can do this is by getting to know an individual better by staying a couple minutes after to fully understand their history, background, etc of whoever it is that I am talking to. This will help to reduce implicit bias.

After reading the article “How to Reduce Implicit Bias” and watching the video “What is Implicit Bias and What Medical Professionals Can Do to Address It,” I learned how to reduce my own implicit bias. Implicit bias is the unconscious attitudes or stereotypes that lead to errors in how we perceive, reason, remember, or make decisions, without intentional control. One way to reduce my own implicit bias is to increase opportunities for contact with individuals from other groups. By expanding my network of friends and colleagues where there are people of other racial and ethnic groups, gender identities, sexual orientation, etc., I can become more understanding and familiar with their personal lives. This allows me to be more open minded when it comes to learning about other peoples origins, culture, interests, and overall lifestyles, as well as ignore the stereotypes that society puts on certain groups of people.

Increasing exposure to other groups outside your pre-existing social network can help reduce implicit bias. After the pandemic, my social network became much smaller and primarily included only my close family members and a few friends and co-workers who live near my house. For this reason, many of the people I interact with weekly are in very similar groups. I now want to address my implicit biases and meet new people who are from different groups. I can accomplish this by going to places I have never been to, like the beach, mall, or park. Hopefully, this will have the added benefit of overcoming my social anxiety as well.

Also, another way to reduce implicit bias is by increasing opportunities to contact individuals from different groups. I think that having a good relationship with people from different ethnic groups is important. It can help to be more open-minded about other people's backgrounds and why they are acting a certain way towards different situations. Overall, these are some ways to help reduce implicit bias.

By doing this, you are working on consciously changing your responses to stereotypes by replacing them with positive examples of the stereotyped group.

After watching the video "What is Implicit Bias and What Medical Professionals Can Do to Address it" and reading the article "How to Reduce Implicit Bias," I learned techniques that can help me reduce my implicit bias. An implicit bias is a subconscious stereotype or attitude toward someone or something that we unknowingly have. One way I can reduce my own implicit bias is by perceiving people as individuals, rather than a stereotype. I can get to know them and really understand who they are, rather than perceiving them as one thing or one title. Before placing a subconscious bias one someone, it is a great idea to get to know them before. This could really improve your relationships with the people around you, and also make you a better understanding and more welcoming person. In the Public health industry, I believe it is very important to determine any implicit biases of your own before subconsciously defining someone.

Learning about their own personal history and what brought them in the medical office. It important to acknowledge an individual reasons instead of making any stereotypes about them. A lot of the times we make assumptions without getting to know the person. Just like the video outlines its great to know your own implicit bias and be open in changing that. Have a moment of self reflection in the medical field. Without being aware of your own mistakes one wont take the initiative to change or correct that aspect of themselves.

I have said mean things and I have made assumptions that have offended people in the past but just because I think something is funny, it may not be funny for the other person. I have to take into consideration what I am saying and how I am saying it but at the same time, I realize that I cannot make everyone happy. If I offend anyone I am sorry but sometimes I think it is important for people to know how to take a joke outside of the workplace but while in the workplace we need to respect everybody and relate to one another to build a stronger connection.

To do this, I will attend festivals or events that each culture or group celebrates like Cinco De Mayo, Mardi Grass and Pride Parade since I love going to this kind of events. I will enjoy and learn each group at the same time. Another one is to go places and explore their culture like trying out their food and hanging out with locals since this is the best and easy way to be aware of our differences.

I have came to realize that being close-minded to other people's opinions to force people to stray away from me. This will lesson my self-efficacy because being close-minded will lead to me losing relationships. I need to think twice about things I do, and as I do that I need to be open-minded. This forced me to take action to reduce implicit bias because I do work in healthcare and plan to work in healthcare for a long time and for the best of the patient's care, I need to reduce implicit bias.

After learning from “What is Implicit Bias and What Medical Professionals Can Do to Address It” and “How to Reduce Implicit Bias”, one way I can reduce my own implicit bias is going through perspective taking. Specifically in the “How to Reduce Implicit Bias” article, this is when I need to put myself in the other person’s shoes. Growing up my parents have tried to instill this in my life. They always wanted me to see different sides to things because life is full of surprises and not always what it seems. Although my parents have stressed this habit a lot, I still struggle to put myself in other people’s shoes. I feel like it’s hard to do that sometimes when it feels like everyone has it figured out, but it’s important to understand everyone is different and may have problems of their own that is not visible to others. I will get better about this by catching myself when I start to assume things about others. I will put myself in the other person’s shoes and keep in mind that I do not know everything and do not need to know everything about one person. I will respect people no matter what!

Getting to know different backgrounds and their personal characteristics will give one an idea what other cultures may be and get to know the person as an individual. Implicit bias will then be overcame when one thinks of themselves in their friend's shoes. Like how would you feel if someone thinks of you that way that you think is not true and it is truly just because of stereotypes an implicit bias? Perspective taking in my opinion will be an effective way to reduce unconscious bias because it triggers empathy and that you will feel for your friend who is part of the minority group.

The video “What is Bias, and What Can Medical Professionals Do to Address it?” was very informational. To be more specific, the speaker Anurag Gupta in the video defined bias perfectly. He stated that implicit bias (also known as unconscious bias) “ingrained habits of thought that lead to errors in how we perceive, reason, remember, and make decisions” and he goes on to say that implicit bias is the leading factor to inequity in our country. That being said, an individuals implicit bias is really important in ones perception, judgment, and decision making. When it comes to the medical field it is important to set ones own bias view aside or else it could really cloud their judgment, which can negatively affect another person’s medical treatment. In the video, Anurag Gupta has three steps you can follow to reduce your implicit bias. The first step to set that implicit bias aside is to understand what your implicit bias is. The second step is to look at our social environment by looking at our friends ethnic background, that’s how you find out what community you are in because that’s are biggest influence. Third step is to create a diverse group of friends.
1. Recognizing my implicit bias: For me personally, my biggest implicit bias is the stereotypes around gender roles. I currently work for the VA Hospital and I actually have a bad habit of assuming every patient is male. If I am calling a patient on the phone and they have either a complicated name or unisex name, I automatically assume they are a male because majority of our veterans are males. On the flip side, that’s not the case anymore. More and more females are enlisting to the military. Now a days I see more female veterans, so it’s a bad habit I need to stop.
2. My social environment: When I look at my list of friends I am mainly friends with Hispanic people and the main reason for this is I am Hispanic, so these are the people I relate to. That being said majority of Hispanic families do follow the old traditions of gender roles. The female cooks, clean, and is the main caregiver meanwhile the males work and do nothing when it comes to housework. That is something that has been taught to me through my family and friends
3. Create a Diverse Group of Friends: I actually work in San Bernardino, so the population there is pretty diverse. I work with a lot of people of color, so it will be easy for me to make friends with more people of color. (I am friends with black people and people of asian background, but they are more on the coworker friendship level, my closest friends are all Hispanic). That is something I should change

After watching and reading the resources that were provided for us to learn about implicit bias, I learned a lot. Out of all the options to choose from on how to reduce implicit bias, it is hard to just choose one way since there are so many options. Although I really liked the idea of perspective taking, I think the one most important thing that everyone can do is to educate themselves on the different cultures that everyone has. There are so many cultures around the world that if everyone took the time to learn about them then everyone would have a better understanding of what they go through and how they can better attend them especially in a healthcare setting. I think that it is so important because a person is so much more than their looks or beliefs or sexuality and that is the point that we need to teach people. I brought up perspective taking because it ties into educating yourself on different cultures and really spending the time to learn about what each and every person goes through. Everyone is different in their own way and it is something that we need to implement in society because it is just as important as everything else if not more.

The video "What is Implicit Bias and What Medical Professionals Can Do to Address It" even mentions a test that is available online that can inform us about our own implicit biases. By doing this, we are able to learn and even remove any of these biases when working as a medical professional. In the end, it will allow us to treat everyone effectively, efficiently, and evenly. Ultimately our goal is to completely eliminate any health care disparities amongst populations that are experiencing it.

After watching the video "What is Implicit Bias and What Medical Professionals Can Do to Address it" and reading, "How to Reduce Implicit Bias", I came into the realization that as unbiased as I try to be there are some techniques I really need to work on, one being creating a more diverse groups of friends. Looking back I see that most of my friends are all Hispanic just as I am, and although I did not do this intentionally, it brought me to understand that I need to set aside my shyness and seek for friendships everywhere I go. Since I already have a set of friends already, I do not feel the need to look for more friendships; however that is a horrible way of thinking. Opening up to others will allow me to look outside the small box I have trapped myself in.

After reading the article "How to Reduce Implicit Bias," I believe that practicing perspective-taking is one method I can use to reduce my own implicit bias. This phrase implies that you should put yourself in the shoes of others. Learning this method is critical for me because I have difficulty imagining other people's experiences. When this happens, I feel as if I cannot empathize, and if I try, I may come across as cold or uncaring. It's sometimes challenging for me to think about others' feelings since I'm too preoccupied with my own worries. Furthermore, because I am sarcastic, the jokes that I find amusing may not be amusing to others. There are moments when I don't understand why someone is so upset over something. For example, their circumstance may be extremely distressing to them, while I consider it to be trivial. However, I know that I can improve on perspective-taking because I already feel as if I am. One thing I always tell myself is that if I told someone about my situation, I'd want them to take it seriously as well. I still have trouble putting myself in other people's shoes, but ever since I started volunteering at a hospital and interacting with more people, I have begun to reduce my implicit bias.

As I watched and read the provided resources about implicit bias, I was able to put it into better perspectrive how it can occur, especially in healthcare settings. Reducing implicit bias cannot happen overnight and often, some people may not even realize they possess these subconscious stereotypes or attitudes towards others. It will take more than a lifetime for society to change but there are steps we can take as individuals to reduce it. The most important aspect I feel is being aware and educated on various cultures. United States is often metaphorically deemed as a salad bowl, lots of cultures together in one place. We may not be able to know all aspects such as beliefs and traditions about every single culture but the least we can do is to be aware and respectful towards them.

I found that an effective way to reduce my personal implicit bias is to expose myself to diversity. This can be present in networking for a future career or even making a new friend in class who may be from a different racial and ethnic group, gender identity, sexual orientation. With being open to building relationships, you will learn more about them and be able to even relate to them in a sense.

In healthcare settings, I feel that patients are often at their most vulnerable and providers and their care team should be easing this process. I personally think that with these individuals having implicit biases, it can directly or indirectly affect so many various realms of the care the patient is receiving.

After reading “How to Reduce Implicit Bias” I think that the best way to reduce my own implicit bias would be increasing opportunities for contact with individuals from different groups. This is defined as “Expanding one’s network of friends and colleagues or attending events where people of other racial and ethnic groups, gender identities, sexual orientation, and other groups may be present.” Since most of my friends come from the same racial group, expanding my network of friends would allow me to empathize and understand other cultures and racial struggles better. Also, better understanding other people’s gender identity and sexual orientation would allow me to be more sensitive to the topic and learn more about how to actively support the community. In Public Health it is so important to not assume things about others regardless of what group they belong to, and making the effort to recognize and reduce our own implicit biases will make us better Public Health professionals in the future.

Also, I am very thankful for my new job because I have met and work with people from all different backgrounds. I am someone who is quicker to look out for those close to me rather than myself. In expanding my fiend group I will get a better understanding of what those around me are going through and learn what my role is in helping them if needed.

To work on my biases, I would put myself in their shoes to work on my empathy. If I work on my empathy, I can break though my implicit bias of others and help myself from stereotyping others. Another method that could help me limit my bias on others is to familiarize myself with the cultures of others to understand them better and not be as judgmental. If I reduce my implicit bias then it would help me maintain a good relationship with others and limit any understandings.

It was interesting to see that some people may not realize that they are not bias because of what was engrained in our learning about Americans' freedoms. That is why, it is so important to realize and recognize that we are being bias, that is always the first step to reduce implicit bias. A way I can reduce my own implicit bias would be to be open-minded and respectful towards other people. I think it is so important to be open-minded when dealing with people because you may not know where they came from, but being open minded can help you learn more and be educated on what their culture may do. Being open-minded helps you become more accepting and allows you to meet all different kinds of people.

An implicit bias is some subconscious gravitation towards a specific group or person and I always swaying towards a side that makes me more comfortable. At times it is great to be comfortable with who you associate yourself with but at the same time we are all in a community with such diverse people who think differently than who we surround ourselves with. I want to be more comfortable with not being in my comfort zone and step out of my boundaries just a bit to meet and understand different people or groups.

It is important for individuals to become knowledgable of implicit bias because we live in such a diverse community whether it is sex, gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc. Understanding these differences and respecting them would allow us to step away from the subconscious gravitations we form to what we feel most comfortable with. This will broaden my knowledge of other people’s opinions and their cultural perspectives. I will become more culturally aware, which will effectively diminish any implicit bias that I may have. In addition, perspective taking will help me put myself into another person’s shoes to understand them better.

It was pretty shocking to see that the unconscious, or implicit bias in our society, after watching the videos and reading the articles. One thing I noted from the

"What Is Bias, and What Can Medical Professionals Do to Address It?" video was that less than 9% of physicians and less than 15% of nurse/ nurse practitioners are of color. This statistic was explained in the three ways to address implicit bias. The first one being, knowing your implicit bias. The second one was to take a social inventory, and the third one was to create a diverse group of friends. I also noted that there was a test called Project Implicit created by Harvard University to measure your implicit bias in various subjects. I went to the website and completed the test for Race IAT. The results showed me that I have no automatic preference between black and white people. This was a relief because I honestly did not think I had a preference over one race or another. I knew that it was a possibility because implicit bias can be unconscious. I think that is a crucial way of thinking when it comes to reducing implicit bias; being open to the fact that it is possible that they have implicit bias even though they do not think they ever would. This allowed for me to actually conduct the Implicit Project test and see what are things I could work on if the tests says there is implicit bias. Acknowledging that almost everyone has some implicit bias will be the first step in identifying that there is a problem. This was a way for me to help reduce my implicit bias. If I was closed minded and stubborn, I wouldn't even take the test, and that would not help me reduce implicit bias if there was some in a certain subject.

Throughout these past couple years I have been learning and understanding more about implicit bias. Not only can it deeply impact others under a healthcare setting, but it can also do so in every day life. Although we are not actively trying to judge or isolate others, our minds tend to do unconsciously. I think the most important step in reducing implicit bias is to recognize it and take those biases into something positive. Which leads to the next step which is to reinforce positive behavior and notice strengths rather than faults. Finally, take the time to be present and learn about others' cultures.

I think it is important to be aware of our own biases and reflect on how those perceptions we have can affect our interactions with others. Part of reducing our implicit biases is to understand where the other person is coming from. When we go out into the real world, we want to be able to see the individual that we are working with as a unique person and not stereotype them to the point where it affects the care or service we are providing. It is also important that when we notice bias and prejudice in the workplace that we address it as soon as possible, because the people we work with do have a significant influence on perspective and actions. In the professional world, we want to be able to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for the people we serve; and in order to do that, we must start with our own work environment.

As children, we hear the ideas and opinions of our parents and agree with them because we are easily influenced.
