He faces constant beatings and emotional attacks in his home life, while a rival gang has set its sights on him. As the author depicts Johnny on page 11, "If you can picture a little dark puppy that has been kicked too many times and has gotten lost in a crowd of strangers, you'll have Johnny." While Jonny's experiences shape him into a different person, Ponyboy has a different set of challenges. As Ponyboy explained, "Since Mom and Dad got killed in an auto wreck, the three of us get to stay together only as long as we behave... We're careful not to get caught when we can't." While both are in the struggles of poverty and social discrimination, they respond very differently.

The protagonist is Ponyboy and the foil is Bob. Ponlyboy is the main character and he the hero of the story. Bob causes all the problems. He is a jerk to the Greasers and tries to hurt Johnny and then tries to drown Ponyboy. This leads to more conflict in the story.
