I really found it very interesting how Nora delves into the general aspects of the migrants and refugees here in Europe, all information about legal and illegal procedures to arrive in Europe ring true to me, those who escape poverty or war or just want to get a decent life following an education path in schools of any kind can find shelter in Europe, Germany and Italy host many of them giving them several opportunities, as for Italy, my country, migrants and refugees are generally welcome, they get shelters, food and a pocket money for their basic needs, no one sleeps in the streets, the are accomodated in hotels or shelters provided by humanitarian organisations. The real problem is with work, there is little work for local people so one can imagine how hard a task is to find a decent job for migrants. Government must try to focus on the matter and find solutions

This information is new and very interesting for me and I strongly believe that it`s up to us to help the ones in need

This is all true what Nora says in the videos and although the problems of the refugees are almost similar in each countries , the ways of solution are sometimes dramatically different depending on the number of refugees crossing the border of a given country and the possibilities of the state. It is also true what people say that the most important is communication and dissemination of knowledge necessary for the asylum seekers to go through complicated procedures.
Poland is the country whose current government is extremely reluctant to admit asylum to any seekers of Muslim origin. I am personally ashamed of this kind of approach and we as teachers advocate all possible projects to change that situation.

As a Sicilian, it is really so difficult for me to make any comments on Nora's description of the living conditions of newly arrived migrants in the whole of Italy and in Sicily in detail. We've often heard about the overcrowded camps in Pozzallo or Mineo. It is a shame how people live there. They are supposed to stay in the camps 72 hours, but most of them are stuck there for months. And among them there are so many minors.

Nora highlights the importance to let refugees enter Europe legally that is to apply for a study visa or a permit working visa, but it's quite often impossible because to apply for this they have to go to the embassy of the country they want to reach and for exemple in Siria there aren't all embassies. She says that there's the "settlement program" to take care of refugees but it is planned in countries near the countries in war and it is decided that all those people come back to their native countries legally. It's a sort of a temporary settlement that doesn't solve refugees' problems. When they arrive illegally they try to join the communities of people having their same nationality in order to know what doing, their rights and also their duties. In Italy there are temporary Refugee Camps for migrants and there are also some associations which provide for them (to apply for residence permit and documents, to go to school to learn Italian and to find a job). These associations also provide them with a little money to live.

Many of them dont even know their rights and their responsibilities, how the asylum and welfare system works. The difficlies, which the refugees confront are significant, not only during their journey but also during their stay in The EU.
Despite the fact that in Greece the legislation with regard to the asylum seekers is excellent, it is not applied lack of resources...
Of course there are people who are very friendly to the refugees in Greece, but there are protests against them (especially from people who share far right ideas). A lot of people protest in Greece against the refugees, using the following argument "Why EU gives money for the welfare of the refugees, while there is no money for the local people, who suffer on account of the economical crisis?"

In my area there aren't first shelters, since the refugees should cross all Italy to come here. In the province of Brescia last year there were around 2600 asylum seekers, but only about 7% got it, and the 61% of the requests had a negative answer. Refugees (usually from Africa; from Asia we have especially Pakistany immigrants, who flight in, usually have degrees, work and intend to stay) live usually in hotels and apartments (usually they try to distribute people around the province, in order to avoid fears and negative reactions from the "natives") and, apart from food and basic needs items, they received, for instance in the center of Breno, a small but rich village, actions to help them to integrate, linguistically, culturally, but also as workers. In this center they take care even of refugees with special needs, like mental diseases. In other small centers refugees help the council with small jobs, intended to keep the town cleaner and to show their willingness to the inhabitants... Also the church help them, and about 150 refugees are hosted by local communities. In my village there are twenti refugees (young men) in small apartments, originally designed for rich elderly (but were weren't old people rich enough or interested in buying them...)
There aren't people sleeping on the street. I know, on the other hand, that in some regions of the Southern Italy the situation can get hard, because there aren't enough shelters to host all the people coming from the sea (and the unemployement rate is far worse...). The majority of the people want to leave Italy for other European countries, but they often stay here, even when they have relatives in Germany or France.

The situation of migrants in Rome is not easy. According to Censis in 2015, 12.7% of the inhabitants of Rome is foreign.

The integration is increasingly difficult and increasing episodes of intolerance.

Like it is said before, migrants do not want to stay in Greece but cause of the situation of the borders they cannot do anything and go anywhere. As I have heard, migrants stay in the hotspots are having a daily small financial support and they are not allowed to work. The majority has relatives and want to go to North Europe. I have no view of shelters but they cannot be good, having so many people in all weather conditions, these are not living conditions.
For me, another issue are unaccompanied children that makes me sad and worry me more.

There is still a lot of work ahead to improve the situation for newly arriving migrants. Each person has a story to tell and reasons why they left their home countries. I strongly believe that integration can only work if people are allowed to work and if they learn the new language a.s.a.p. to be able to communicate with Austrian people and to increase their chances to get a good job. At school things work quite well at the moment even though more teachers would be needed.

Migrants arriving in Almería are supported by family or friends who have previously arrived. They also contact local authorities which provide basic help to settle down and associations which provide information, advice and emotional support to help them adapt to their new life. They have had many difficulties to find or keep a job during the past economic crisis and some have gone back to their countries. Now the situation is slowly improving, and the communities are stable. More resources would be needed for a better integration

I work in CPIA in Varese, North of Italy with refugees. The situation for all is very difficult. Many are from Nigeria, Somalia, Mali, Etiopia, Eritrea..they live in precar condition. Group of 80 men spend the day only with italian course and Nothing else. Sometimes cooperative take care about them for documents, food, dress, health but it'no sufficient. I live in a small town near the Etna volcano. I must say that, at least my area doesn't live the drama of the arrival of new migrants or refugees. Some migrants reach relatives and are hosted in their homes but often others are dropped and this certainly doesn't improve the social life of anyone. But I think that is essential better information to arrive at a sufficient integration. Unfortunately in Italy life has become too hard for many persons and it is not easy to integrate and above all keep in decent conditions refugees, migrants and also italian people. It's a downright shame sheltering migrants on the greek islands. Regional dwellers do their best to help these poor people out but sheltering system is absolutely scarce ans inadequate on most islands.
People live in the worst possible conditions having no idea what future has in store.
Sole way out their moving to Athens where they can start contacting fellow migrants or searching relatives.

I visited some of the pupils in the buildings that they were staying in. Very close quarters, loud, no privacy and not welcoming. But they are making the best of the situation.

One of the buildings was a school. The classrooms were split in half. One half for each family. Some had 3 bunk-beds and 3 small wardrobes, a small table with 4 chairs. The families had to take turns eating. They were very cramped. The kitchen was shared by 20 people. There were 2 small refrigerators, one stove , one sink and 4 cabinets. The old gym was turned into sleeping quarters for single men. The school showers in the gym were men's and women's. The same with the rest rooms. There was no privacy whatsoever.

I couldn't imaging living in such a small space with my husband and 4 children. We would fight a lot due to "cabin fever". Even if it is a "gift" it is very stressful to live under such conditions. It has been a 18 months now.

As it is stated by my colleagues in Greece, refugees don't want to stay in our country because of the really bad living conditions and the lack of work and education. Some of them already have relatives in other European countries and they want to go and stay with them. In Switzerland, migrants have been mostly entering the country by the southern region of Ticino, near Italy's Como. The influx has forced Swiss authorities to turn many away, with Amnesty International slamming them for refusing entry to migrant children. Another issue is that up to 40% of refugees who asked for asylum in Switzerland disappeared from Swiss reception centers shortly afterwards (mainly heading for Germany)

Sweden took about 28 939 refugees last year and in 2015 got here 162 877 refugees. This produced panic at the national and local level because the country was not prepared for so many people but the Swedish government try to find solutions for this situation. Arriving in Italy
Migrants usually do not want to stay in Italy, but they would like to move north to reach other countries, like Germany and Sweden, because they know that here it's really difficult to catch a job due to financial crisis.
According to Dublin agreement migrants have to ask for asylum or any Visa in the first EU country they reach and they cannot chose the country they prefer (these country are usually Italy and Greece, the most hit by economic crisis). The unique exception is that they can reach the nation where their relative with asylum permit is.
Migrants can apply for international protection.request and a special committe will judge the situation. Migrants have the right to be assisted by a lawyer (paid by the state if you can't afford it).
If migrants have entered illegally the country they have to recognized by police forces.
The committee (formed by two from ministry of Internal Affairs, one from local autorities, one from UNHCR) decided during the audition (the day is communicated to the migrant by police forces). After sending the asylum request, the migrant has to live in one of the statal shelter. They have to stay there and ask permission to leave the centre if they want to.
Migrants have the right to medical care, legal assistance, family or UNHCR's members visits.
If the committee decided that the migrant is a refugee you obtain a visa that lasts 5 years and can be renewed. The migrant has also the right to work, to social and health care, to the journey document, to move freely in EU territory, to public education, to gain IT citizenship after living here for five years. The migrant has also the right to appeal against a negative judgement.

I thought that migrants with refugee status did little question in their land, after which they were sent to a country where they were rescued. The in Italy, the network of initial reception, is run by the Interior Ministry and is divided into 14 shelters, 5 centers for identification and expulsion, 1861 temporary structures, 430 centers of the protection system for asylum seekers and refugees.

The Italian region which has the highest number of refugees is Lombardy (13%), followed by Piemonte, Veneto, Lazio, Campania and Sicily (8%), Emilia Romagna, Tuscany and Puglia (7%).

Compared with other regions, mine is quite friendly with newly arrived migrants so many of them don't have plans to move on to another country in Europe above all if they find a job.Regarding the young refugees they go to school where they get the A2 level . They get a financial support too ,that consists into a pocket money of 2 £ a day.
They have health assistance and are guided to apply for asylum.Their shelters aren't bad and they go up and down the town with their colourful bikes in their free time when they aren't busy with the activities in which they are involved. All that don't
mean they are happy
to live far from their families and countries
but I think that the Italian government is doing its best to help
the migrants.I'm sure more than other rich countries.

Most of the migrants here are economic migrants coming from a lot of African countries but there are also from Bangladesh, Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan and a few from Kurdistan and Iran. I know that some of them have applied or have been recognized the status of refugee. I haven't been able to talk to them yet but I'll try to do it in a couple of weeks. Some of them have found a job and some of them do odd jobs or begs outside churches, supermarkets and so on. Those who can't stay at the shelter sleep on the roads.

1.6 Arriving in Europe - Investigation activity

Migrants arriving in my area are offered with shelters that are usually the living solutions for some months up to a few years; it always depends on the time people take to receive their permision to travel in Italy. When staying here, they receive € 2.50 a day, this sum is usually given every 2/3 months so as to create a certain amount of money. As soon they arrive, they try to buy a mobile phone to get in touch with families at home and they look for a good pair of shoes. Shoes are very important as they know that the journey to their final destination is still long. SPRARs and CASes help them with the documents to be recognized as migrants. Many of them want to go to northern Europe, because there is less economic crisis than here in Italy. Some of them, prefer to stay in Lamezia, if they find a job and they are very hard workers, highly appreciated by everybody.

Asylum-seeker are individuals who have sought international protection and whose claims for refugee status have not yet been determined. In the Republic of Croatia those foreigners seeking protection from persecution in own countries are received by competent authorities (Ministry of Interior) and offered humanitarian and legal assistance by NGO's with UNHCR support. Asylum-seekers are mostly accommodated in reception centres in Kutina and Zagreb where they await the resolution of their asylum application.

Greece remains a gateway into the European Union for thousands of refugees and migrants, a fact that creates pressure at the borders, especially Greece’s borders with Turkey. The asylum system in Greece was, for years, characterized by chronic deficiencies, such as limited access to the asylum-procedure and registration of asylum applications, the lack of procedural safeguards, shortcomings in interpretation services, poor quality of asylum interviews. This situation, in addition to violating international obligations of the country, resulted in refugees being unable or not willing to seek asylum in Greece. Access of asylum seekers to legal employment, particularly to work permits, has become extremely difficult, and close to impossible.The overall negative atmosphere towards foreigners does not distinguish between refugees and economic migrants, persons present legally or illegally in Greece, those who have live in Greece for years or new arrivals. Xenophobic reactions and behaviors, as well as violent incidents with racist motives, have regularly also affected asylum seekers and refugees. Xenophobia and racism have a negative impact to the enjoyment of rights, from access to asylum to social rights, including access to health care, education and employment, and have seriously affected possibilities for integration.

Migrating for Hellas, except for the war times, has been mainly to other countries. Constant wars and economic problems have forced the citizens of this country to form communities all over the world.
In the 1990s the first wave of incomers came from the neighbouring countries of former Eastern Countries, mainly Albania. The legal system and the bureocracy was not ready to absorve the incomers and to an extent they did not wish to either, because the first ones in where released prisoners from Albania...
The years coming have found the country in a better economic position. All the migrants worked in jobs locals did not wish to do and their hands helped the country's agriculture.
Nowadays, with the crisis, nobody wishes to stay in Hellas. There is no provision for locals, for citizens. No unemployment benefit for citizens. How can a destroyed country cater for migrants?
Despite all that, because of a great solidarity from the people the country has managed in this difficult situation to offer humanitarian aid and respect to the refugees. The NGO's and support from the EU have helped too. Unfortunately that is all this country has to offer: A human face, so most people wish to move on, believing there is no future here.

Only recently thefirst refugees or newly arrived migrants have being resettled in Portugal. And most of them are coming from Greece or Italy. Portugal's crisis and unemployment rate don't make of it an appealing destination. It’s easier for an immigrant to go to the center of Europe where there is a more concentrated market and higher incomes. Portugal, unlike other European countries, never had a large Syrian, Afghan or Eritrean community, which may explain the fact that people awaiting relocation don’t name the country as afirst priority. Nevertheless the country is ready to receive them and has many organizations that are collaborating with refugees' camps in Greece . PAR – the Refugee Support Platform is a portuguese network of organizations from civil society whose aim is to support hosting refugees during the current humanitarian crisis. Each organization sharing this purpose is invited to integrate the platform.

PAR has been formally recognized by the Portuguese Government through a cooperation protocol and is a member of the Working Group for the Migration Agenda.

In Calabria there are 53 shelters. In some of them migrants live in very bad conditions and the situations in Rosarno is well known. Migrants conditions in Lamezia Terme are different. They live for some months up to a few years in decent shelters. They receive € 2.50 a day, this sum is usually given every 2/3 months so as to create a certain amount of money. SPRARs and CASes help them with the documents to be recognized as migrants. Many of them want to go to northern Europe, because of crisis here in Italy. Two of my students went to Germany. Another one lives in Lamezia in a private house and he works in a restaurant. The youngest of them is still studying and he lives with an Italian family. So, when migrants find a job they appreciate staying in my region because of the mild climate and the friendly people. Migrants are very hard workers, highly appreciated by everybody. At Christmas and at Easter they have been involved in the decoration of our town. The situation is different in other parts of Calabria. The living, working and sanitary conditions of the several thousand migrants who arrive at the Piana di Gioia Tauro every year to harvest citrus fruits are consistently appalling. They are mainly from sub-Saharan Africa and are living in shanty towns or abandoned country cottages of the municipalities of Rosarno, San Ferdinando, Rizziconi and Taurianova.

What Nora says about Italy, if I have well understood, is a partial vision of the problem, from what she says it seem that in Italy all migrants are sleeping in the streets, this is probably true for some cases (borders with France...) but not for all... We also have many shelters and many volunteers and associations trying to build projects with migrants, and also some associations exploiting migrants to get money from the government...

In Italy, migrants receive many state and religious and non-religious associations. In my city there is a very large reception center that hosts many migrants, have nice rooms with bath and bed always clean, hot meals, clothes, and money. Many work, others would like to bring their families to Europe.

In my town and in all the region, often, migrants men come first to look at a job and when they work and have a house, their families come already in Italy. The children go to school and they try to be including in the comunity. In Italy they don't reach any financial support. Refugees are helped by the state, they have possibiliy to live in recidences.
