Assemble – Granby Four Streets

Another great example of a similar idea and values project is in the process of realization. It’s a Granby Four Street in Liverpool implemented by London-based studio Assemble.

Granby Street, once a vibrant hub in Liverpool's most diverse area, saw most of its streets demolished after numerous failed regeneration projects. The community was scattered, but a group of determined residents launched a campaign to reclaim their streets. They cleared, planted, painted, and campaigned for over two decades. This effort led to the formation of the Granby Four Streets Community Land Trust, which hired Assemble to create a vision for the area, turning empty homes into affordable housing. This initiative built on the residents' hard work to refurbish housing, improve public spaces, and create new opportunities for the community.

The approach was characterised by celebrating the value of the area’s architectural and cultural heritage, supporting public involvement and partnership working, offering local training and employment opportunities and nurturing the resourcefulness and DIY spirit that defines the four streets. The outcome of this vision has been the realisation of a number of projects including 10 Houses on Cairns Street, Granby Winter Garden and Granby Workshop.

The main principles of the studio are very close to my project ideas:

Assemble seeks to actively involve the public as both participant and collaborator in their work

Celebrating the value of the area’s architectural and cultural heritage

Improve space and create new opportunities for the community. In my case to create the community itself from scratch

Conclusions from Dharavi slums documentary

Dharavi is the world’s most extraordinary slam

How people use space, every inch is prized

How space here is flexible, how it changes with people’s needs

The most inspiring place I’ve ever seen

We put people into boxes and destroyed the community

Human beings love the complexity, staff to interesting and varied and textured and delightful and we do not respond to everything being in straight lines and painted white, because we get bored of it very quickly. We get bored of housing estates, industrial estates, and shopping centres, because they don’t offer that depth and that layering

Dharavi without planning or design is doing in 20 years what our society did in 200

They do definitely seem very happy. These are the sort of community values that people in Britain would love to see

Architects, planners and even Prince Charles are convinced that this slum has something to teach us

‘I strongly believe that the West has much to learn from societies and places which while sometimes poorer in material terms are in many senses influently richer in the ways in which they live and organize themselves as communities’

We lack in our cities a strong sense of community, safe neighbors, and employment rate

This place is deliberately trying to screw your mind

It’s always easier to knock things down when you let them develop anywhere. The first inevitable instinct is to destroy everything, to remake it. This should be remodeled in a major way

Hidden gem

Ideal place for communities to live in

Dirty, wild, dangerous, full of crime - how slums look from outside

Dharavi is a place of extraordinary contrasts. It is an embryonic city humming with human energy and determination

People here are happy, welcoming and hugely proud of where they live

Low-impact sustainable life

How space can be multi-functional and share

The pride of place and community creates safe neighborhoods

Improving this place would be far more beneficial to the people here than redeveloping it

What have we got wrong, but they’ve got right. We’ve spent last 60 years since the war pursuing the material at the expense of pursuing happiness. Whether the material is necessarily bad, but that actually the important thing is to be happy.

How little we really need to make us happy

Deal with the bad and not destroy the good

One thing that has to be preserved is that warmth, that sort of connection between all of that happiness

Conclusion:

People create their perfect environment according to their needs by themselves

Poor people dream bigger, less borders

Less staff and comfort -> More happiness and pure beauty

Do not create from scratch, but to improve. Do not destroy, but remake

Low-crime environment is creating by the pride of place and community

Happiness is a key. A really little is needed to make us happy

While I was thinking about people's development and professional/self-improvement as a main function of this space, it appears that people all around the world are seeking for community and networking among personalities with similar life principles and values, with similar ways of living.

So now I'm going to create a space where the community will be invited hugely in its development and improvement. The space will not only celebrate the value of the cultural heritage but also create new opportunities for the community.

As part of my primary research for the investigation project, I created a survey for creatives from Ukraine which I shared on my social network page and asked my colleagues to share among their friends from our sphere.

The results have given me a lot to think about. The main discovery is that, both in my primary and secondary research, creatives from different parts of the world are seeking community and networking. Following closely is their passion for learning and professional development. While information in various formats is highly accessible—such as online books, exhibitions, performances, podcasts, and videos—what is truly needed is a community that shares close values and principles.

Implementing my idea in real life is becoming increasingly complex.
