Rough calculations of the rate of extinction of species can be made, based on current knowledge of the evolution of biodiversity over time. Ecosystem services are the benefits that people derive from ecosystems. Biodiversity plays an important role in the functioning of ecosystems and in the many services they provide. These include nutrient cycling and water cycling, soil formation and retention, resistance to invasive species, plant pollination, climate regulation, pest control, and pollution. In the case of ecosystem services, what matters is not only the number of species present but also which species are abundant.

Biodiversity provides many fundamental benefits for man, beyond the supply of raw materials. Biodiversity loss has negative effects on various aspects of human well-being, such as food security, vulnerability to natural disasters, energy security, and access to clean water and raw materials. It also affects men's health, social relationships, and freedom of choice. Society often has several conflicting goals, many of them dependent on biodiversity. When man alters an ecosystem to improve one of the services it provides, his action often leads to changes for other ecosystem services as well.

For example, measures to increase food production may result in less water available for other uses. As a consequence of these negative counterparts, many services have been degraded; for example fishing, water supply and protection against natural disasters. In the long term, the value of lost services can far outweigh the short-term benefits of transforming ecosystems.

Unlike the products that are bought and sold in markets, many of the ecosystem services are not traded in these markets, nor do they have an easy-to-know price. This means that financial markets are unaware of the importance of biodiversity and natural processes as sources of benefits for man. New methods are now being used to economically value benefits such as recreational activities and drinking water. The degradation of ecosystem services could be significantly slowed or even reversed if the full economic value of these services were taken into account when making decisions.

Over the past century, some people benefited from the transformation of natural ecosystems and increased international trade, while others suffered the consequences of biodiversity loss and limited access to the resources on which they depend. Changes in ecosystems are harming many of the world's poorest, who are the least able to adapt to these changes.
